yep, a remake should reimagine the source material and make a new game ala SOP or ff7 remake. this trend of letting unimaginative, unskilled devs play around with the assets of classic games as "safe" cash grabs (demon's souls, thps series, oblivion) is insulting and the equivalent of letting an utter hack make a shot-for-shot remake of a kubrick film or whatever

It's not a soft reboot. All of your actions lead to the beginning of FF1 You play as Garland and you orchestrate the arrival of the real Warriors of light at the dismay of the Lufenian plans.
If anything it's at least a tie in to Dissidia's story.

I want this with Jecht. Please. I want dadrock, son abandoning, sin-slaycreating adventures. All the pieces are there, FFX is decently popular still.
I wany it to really fuckijg suck when Auron chimps out at the Aeon revelation, I wasnt a sick ass Yunalecsa fight that feels like when the dark elf from SoP transforms and goes off. Its more of a tie to Dissidia.
The Lufenian's "mysterious benefactor" is Shinryu. In the DLC, Gilgamesh mentions another version of Garland (classic FF1/Disiddia Garland), and the Emperor in the final DLC is clearly Disiddia Emperor.
SoP is just a multiverse story really. Its version of Cornelia has regions ripped right out of the other games.

They arent the WoL at all. Sophia was originally on a different team and Neon is Cornellian - she was given Jack's old crystal (explaining her desire to become Chaos). If you did want tp argue any of them are the WoL, you'd exclude Jack. There being thee, and later five, is a minor plot point when people doubt them.

the job system is kino because you can cancel any special move into job switch frame 1
different weapons have different set-ups. you can equip specials after your combos, after charged attacks, after parries and so on. spear is the most free-form because you can do raw forward + attack or back + attack into specials, which is different from the combos. katana has a stance system for specials too.
compared to nioh you don't have a stamina bar so you can attack as much as you want. it's generally faster and more aggressive. not as many moves but they're very powerful and job swapping gives you a lot of control.

they're playing with the fact that there's 4 party members and 4 fiends in ff1. jack isn't a fiend because he's garland. that's seperate to them having the light crystals which they go on a journey to restore, exactly the same journey in the same order with the same enemies as ff1.

>Sophia was originally on a different team
I thought she was part of Jack's team but as the first one to transform into a fiend the lufenians found out and cut her out not letting her return to Lufenia for the next cycle, but as a fiend she persists between cycles. This was incorporated into Jack's plan and Ash & Jed also turned into fiends but Astos hid that from his manager, allowing them to remain on the team

The companions are gay and can be annoying to listen to but in combat they can contribute a lot with the right set up.
The job system is very different from Nioh's system so comparing them 1:1, it's hard to say which I like better. The SoP system feels very good though. You have lots of different abilities and skills you can add based on job/weapon and all the jobs have their own affinity bonuses (better set bonuses) which, by endgame, you can stack several of.
Instead of Ki, you have magic which you use to cast magic/use skills and you can otherwise spam combos endlessly.

FF has been a multiverse since the PS1 and SNES days. The Gilgamesh who appears in FFVIII is the same one from FFV. When FF does it, it's based because they are not chasing recent trends in media. Multiversal FF is organic and part of the vision of the original creators.

That's why I said "one of" WoL in his final incarnation is stronger. But if you've beaten FF1, then you know that WoL's strength comes from the player not WoL himself. That's the beauty of Stranger of Paradise. It acknowledges the ending of FF1 and establishes that we've reached the final loop of FF1 by giving us control over WoL.

Therefore, it's WoL(You) > Jack > Goddess Lightning > Complete Clive > Cloud = Terra = Firion > Zidane

Should I play this if I hate modern (XII+) FF games? I've been itching for a JRPG and I finished Expedition 33 but it wasn't it.

It's not a JRPG. Its an action game. So that means the main game is short and the replayability is post game and DLC.

I'm probably going back to it after finishing playthroughs on other games. It's just something that's so easy to come back to. Though they really needed to expand any character not named Jack or Astos, most of the characters are kind of forgettable, even your main party.

Also what's the best way to build Cyclic Warrior? I always wanted to try it since it feels like the "canon" final job for Jack.

I gotta admit, it was pretty fucking cool.

I feel like fists actually take a bit longer to get 'started' than some other weapons. I also recently started Nioh 2 with two separate characters and felt like Odachi was clearing faster. If nothing else, it's more versatile early game when you don't have as much ki to really allow fists to shine.

I have to take meticulous notes to return to TN games because if I just load up an old save after not playing for a few months/years, I'll have no clue how I was actually playing my build / what my go to combos were for what enemies.

I mostly just do new playthroughs and decide what classes to mostly focus on and which one I'll main by the end. Makes it a bit easier.

Kind of. Jack is laser focused on killing Chaos, but there's a reason for it. To this end, he will basically force characters and bosses to shut up if the lore dump they're giving isn't Chaos relevant, either by telling them to cut to the chase or punching them. The lore is mostly stuffed at the beginning and end of the game, and while there's some biggish reveals, it's otherwise pretty tame. You mostly get lore from little data spheres and sort of piece it together. Also the whole Limp Bizkit thing makes sense in context, someone tells him Chaos is probably just an ideal over an actual being, and Jack simply refuses to acknowledge it and literally tunes it out by blasting the music. It's very on the nose but again, makes sense with the narrative.

To add to what the other poster (>>724681636) said.
The game isnt full of memes or those sort.of iconic CHAOS moments. Jack is just an extremely blunt character but he's logically consistent throughout the game. Hes a man who cares deeply about his friends but he expresses himself by being to the point and almost abrasive.
I think people like the game because, while it's utterly ridiculous and KNOWS its ridiculous, the game presents itself rather earnestly. It isnt cheeky or ironic. Its extremely sincere about what it is.

This is something a lot of people, especially writers, really sleep on. Self-aggrandizing or self-aware writing is not the answer the stories that hard to take seriously on their face.
If anything, writing a very cheesy/chunni story that takes itself seriously can allow it to come full circle and become genuinely cool or at least endearing.
It's why the original Devil May Cry series works, hell, it's why TGT is so beloved. Even something like Kingdom Hearts would get far more hate if they were winking at the camera every five seconds going
>this is so stupid amirite gamers?

XIV has constant events where they reach back into previous series entries, explained with multiverse shit. And they have collabs with other franchises that also explain away the fact that you have Nier Automata in FF, by using the multiverse excuse.
I feel like whenever FF does this shit, it's less about expanding on some thought out connected universe, and more about nostalgia bait. There isn't anything deep here guys, it's all just an effort for engagement and money.

cloud was in tactics, gilgamesh was in 8, shinra's great great great great grandpa was in 10, then dissidia just went all the way with it.
SoP is basically a dissidia game. all the backstory about garland and the lufenians is from there.
