I'm new to Master Duel, what starter archetype should I save up for?

I suggest looking at Master Duel Meta to figure out what decks are currently good.

Ryzeal is a pretty straightforward deck that is currently very good. Learn about XYZ summoning and you should be good to go.

You usually need two cards with the same level to summon one. So two level 4s can equal a rank 4 (XYZ name for levels). The cards you use to summon it go under the XYZ, acting as a resource. For example, instead of "once per turn, do thing" the XYZ will say "detach a material (card under it), do thing." Then the card you detached goes to the GY.

There's some other complicated stuff, but that should get you through the lower ranks. Ryzeal is all about spamming level 4s to get to rank 4s.

Generally speaking
An XYZ is made by layering two or more monsters of a specific level over eachother.
If it's a Rank 4 (XYZ use Rank instead of Level, but these are visually the same), you'd use Level 4 monsters.
Some will have additional conditions for those monsters, like Synchros do (has to be Dragons, have to be Dark, ect), but Generally XYZ is more flexible than Synchro. It's also sometimes more than 2 monsters required.
Many XYZ have a mechanic that removes one or more of the cards they were placed over from the field as material, usually this is to have "charges" on certain activated abilities, but can also reward you for playing with some XYZ monsters mechanics that want to overlay over eachother.

The design philosophy of the game has massively shifted. For a while after links the game was complete doodoo dogshit FTK slop, then it was "I can do insane combos but my opponent has strong interaction that can instantly end my combo if done at the correct point." Interaction has become strong enough that most of the top decks have lower power level ceilings but better grind games. Somehow all the powercreep has edged the game towards midrange.

Links are like XYZ but without the level requirement, with usually more stringent monster requirements.
Links can freely layer over eachother, contribute the entire stack of monsters under them to the monster coming in over them. They can also eat XYZ monsters and tokens.

The game is awful at high level. Very much "watch the man in front of you play solitaire and shuffle his deck twelve times, and know his combo so you can Ash Blossom it at the moment that breaks it, or else scoop because he has three negates on the board that you will never get through" ass game.
For best results, get some bros and play dosgshit decks put together in a few minutes on, fukkin, whatever it was that replaced yugioh pro. Look into and wrap your head around weird and shitty archetypes, come up with some homebrew bans when something gets out of hand, get crazy ideas when you see pieces of support, then spend five minutes playing linguist with your friends to figure out why the fuck this card won't activate.
Actually playing high level yugioh, in a competitive format nowadays is mostly just miserable.

Ogre can't pop a spell/trap on its ACTIVATION. It has to have been already up, then its EFFECT activated, for Ogre to be able to pop it.
In the above scenario, the field spell is only being activated, not its effect, to protect Padira.

A card game builds on its established library: existing cards don’t suddenly lose their value. Blue Eyes doesn’t suddenly have 1000 attack points. They just make new cards that do new things. It shouldn’t invalidate old cards, rather it should just provide new options and strategies, but a Blue Eyes should still function like a Blue Eyes and be useable in older decks.

Modern Yugioh is a game where you watch someone play anime solitaire by themselves for 10 minutes, with occasional interrupts from the opponent if they have the right card. If the opponents negates a core part of your combo, it's often not worth playing the rest of the match because you know you lost on that one action. You're only allowed one normal summon a turn, and if it gets hard countered, it's over. Shitty pet decks suffer from it more, but it still happens at the top tiers too, to a degree.

Brother i crafted both maliss and ryzeal at full power (ie with all the ignister and mitsurugi cards, plus the random 1-of URs they needed), and i didn't use them even once in ranked because i was too busy messing around with nemleria regenesis in gold.

Master Duel is almost entirely pvp. Its a card game simulator first and foremost. The most recent single player game is on steam but I don't remember what its called and don't care to look.

Master Duel may as well be PvP only. There's technically solo stuff but there's pretty much no progress playing against the AI. You can ignore Duel Links too. For single player, the most recent Yugioh game is the Early Days Collection but that's just a bunch of roms of old games you could find and play yourself. If you wanted to dip your toes into modern there's Legacy of the Duelist Link Evolution, the card pool is out of date but it has all of the mechanics. There's the Rush Duel games too but that's a different format and the second one was never localized.
