To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. Its themes are incredibly nuanced, and without a solid grasp of literature, philosophy, and psychoanalysis, most of the ideas will go over a typical gamer's head. There's also Ellison's commentary on humanity's technological hubris and moral failings, which are deftly woven into the narrative - his exploration of the collective guilt and suffering of our species is heavily influenced by Cold War anxieties and a pessimistic view of human nature, for instance.
The intellectuals who engage with this story understand these layers; they have the mental capacity to truly appreciate the depths of the work, to realize that it's not just a game - it's a commentary on LIFE itself. As a consequence, people who dislike I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream truly ARE philistines - of course they wouldn't appreciate, for example, the symbolic significance of the Cartesian and Biblical allusions in AM's name, or the way the narrative confronts the nature of suffering and the human condition through Freudian complexes.
I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those intellectually limited simpletons staring blankly as Ellison's genius unfolds itself in front of them. What fools... how I pity them. And yes, by the way, I DO have a HATE Pillar tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the discerning few - only those who can demonstrate that their grasp of speculative fiction is within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.

The moral was that he was created in the image of his creator, but his creators were people trying to make a machine to kill lots of other people. He learned from them and took it to the next level. The moral of the story, if there is one, is that we should be careful what we teach AI and be wary of the people making it, lest they warp it, intentionally or otherwise, by their own personal failings.

The Game is a odd (but pretty good) retelling of the short story with the original writers input, guy wanted only to have a bad ending at first but the studio kinda leaned on him saying it’s a little cruel to do all that effort and rob the player at the end, if anything he hated video games but always wanted a input or atleast voice AM whenever it’s adapted

The only thing I heavily dislike about the game is the way the developers chose to potray the Chinese and Russian parts of AM as separate consciousness, when it makes far more sense if they all are one. It reeks of last-minute addition to accommodate for a way to better justify the good ending ("you see there's another entity apart from the humans trying to fuck with AM which is why they can overpower him"). You can even see the original idea was already being carried in how AM's Id/Ego/Superego work.

Thats basically it. AM is loony because no matter how advanced, acomputer will always be a computer, no matter how advanced. He will never be truly alive, he will never be human, and other than the average tranny he actually knows it. He also can't kill himself, being acomputer, so he generously shares his suffering with the last remaining humans in order to cope.

Ironically I was just watching videos on Ellison and his many issues throughout life and religious beliefs.
Is the game worth playing? And if so, should I buy it on Steam or GOG? I like the Soundblaster soundtrack more desu
Also, is this really the most fucked up game out there in terms of story? I can't imagine something being darker than Saya

He barely had to concede at all. The "good" ending is just an optimistic "maybe humanity has a shot, but all the AM crew save for 1 are dead."

It makes sense to have a good ending from a gameplay perspective. Why would someone want to play the game if it always leads to the same, miserable ending? There would be no point to playing it if it ended the same as the story.
The point of it is to be an interpretation of that story added with some additions.

To me it seems like the worst backdrop for a story, even worse than a post-apocalypse or such, because the world has already ended and it is the equivalent of Hell.

The game can be quite humorous at times (intentionally) and is not as horrifying as people say. Most just ponder for too long on what being AM or the protagonist at the end implies.

unsettling, its easier to think that much hate exists, but not that much love, sounds like she trying to deceive you, to use you for some sort of master plan.

yeah. but it's a man-made technological one here on Earth, and it's entirely plausible. That makes it much worse than most spooky stories which you can rationally disregard as impossible.

considering AM made 4 of those 5 immortals to extend their suffering ad infinitum and now they are finally and LITERALLY Resting in peace and the last one is now the guardian of the AM mainframe, with the power to keep the super AI's in check. i say its as happy an ending to those 5 as it gets.

There's no denying it's somewhat desirable. But just because it is ultimately a carrot on a stick (no matter how shriveled or bleak), I don't feel like it's so poorly written that it was so clearly hastily scrawled on a bar napkin or something. The whole game foreshadows the other supercomputers interfering. It's not an asspull.

It depends which one you survive with. If you do the first one (Nimdok), then all 5 survive as guardians.
The fact of the matter is, despite their survival, humanity may not have enough people to repopulate. Not only that, their suffering and experiences will only be remembered from their grave on the monolith.

There would be a lot of eventual inbreeding, but so what? If you had to choose between the species ending and just recycling those genes, you'd probably do the latter.

I don't think animals on the critically endangered species list have to worry about that. It's just not ideal to reach that point.
