Lots of us who prefer SC also enjoyed Elite Dangerous but discovered it was a million miles wide and an inch deep. There's a reason there's a lot more interest in Star Citizen but your particular interests may depend on what you want to do in the game, story, mechanics and more. For instance, they had a solid FPS style (out of ship) gameplay even in the alpha, in a way that was completely cumbersome in ED as long as they've done it. ED basically is
>Why don't do they do SC, but do all the traditional shit the traditional way
and there's a reason it doesn't come to the same end. SC is not perfect by far, and its incomplete, but they are building massively advanced systems on a large scale and if you enjoy that, you may enjoy it The recent expansion in the alpha of medical gameplay mechanics is neat for instance.
Anyway, they have "free fly" events every so often when those without game keys purchased can play for free. The only downside here is that the userbase is usually a massive glut (think much like a new MMO's expansion release) so the servers have more trouble than normal play. If you find you think its promising in any way, then buy a key/game package and that's all you need (except a key for SQ42 which is a separate game. Some ancient legacy packages like mine have them included). Note that pretty much since its inception, the whole
>buy shit early, it will be cheaper and you'll get free widgets
has been true. I know people who bought a $30 package in 2014 or so and have been playing with that since then and got all kinds of other shit along the way. Anyway, give it a try. Mid to late Nov is the

in game and store/website even when a lot of other stuff is made available for free to try including a ton of ships you would otherwise have to unlock in the alpha by playing and earning alpha cash etc. So yeah, good luck anon. I have fun with it - it feels like an oldfag MMO with a good community.
