It was the fact that the initial release already charged $60-$80 just to get in plus a season pass that did nothing and then they still had the gall to charge for skins. The monetization was jewish on every level.
The game was probably fun and if it were still free to play now (but with the original ruleset instead of everyone doming) i'd play it some but nobody could eat that much shit on an unproven, MP only property where one player being shit ruins an entire match.

Any multiplayer game without dedicated servers that can be run without company infrastructure that also doesn't have modding tools sucks.
Early to mid 2010s multiplayer games have an incredibly bad shelf life due to the Freemium craze at the time that convinced companies to start forcing everything to have an account, no modding and an experimental cash shop.
Even the shit that survived this long is barely two steps removed from a Gacha game.

In freemium matchmaking shit, asymmetrical PvP means you're trying to balance two sides that you are trying to condition into hating each other, which just means that you end up with both sides hating you as well.
In symmetrical PvP you at least can start cultivating sunk costs, rituals and other Skinner box shit, but symmetrical PvP would mean a disproportionate amount of effort would have to go into maintaining the game.

AvP2 did it just fine, with aliens/predators/humans being extremely different and all of them being viable. You could argue a human with a pulse sniper was technically the best, since it was a hitscan, instant kill on headshot on (iirc) anything in the game short of an alien queen, but you could then also argue the same for the speargun predator or really any of the aliens if a player was sufficiently cracked out enough.
Asymmetric PvP is fine. Modern game design just cripples skill ceilings to appeal to casual drooling retards, which inevitably means the maximum performance of the various elements is capped and I honestly don't know of any developers that have managed to balance this in such a way that one doesn't slightly outperform the other, leading to it dominating at high level every time.
