The game sucks and it’s full of cheap asset flips. Barely any marketing too, but that’s what happens when it’s a Game Pass title.
Still, it’s low-budget, so the devs probably expected it to flop anyway.

Stellar blade was heavily marketed by Sony and it was also massive in cultural discourse. I don't think the game would have done anywhere near as well if it was marketed as much as NG4. They really didn't do much to raise awareness. It's also probably harder to sell a game with 4 in the title but I've got no evidence for that.

DMC is popular because of Dante's design and personality. Compared to Dante, Ryu looks generic and most people don't get the appeal of Ryu until they see him in action.

This is also true. Team Ninja caught on to this real quickly with Nioh. People don't give a fuck about combat depth or the artistry behind solid game mechanics and design. They'll rather look up some farming guide or guide for an OP build to cheese the game with and then to social media about how they conquered a "hard game." Though Team Ninja's games are based for the reason that they still retain the philosophies of solid action game design and mechanics while using RPG mechanics to lure in new players. You can sense a desire to make an action game, but Team Ninja knows that a pure action game just won't sell. Microsoft had to foot the bill for NG4 to be made. So any loss on NG4 falls on Microsoft since Team Ninja and Platinum go paid to make the game + DLC. Could NG4 see a surge in popularity years after launch? It's possible but who knows.

That's why Nioh is many times more popular than Ninja Gaiden despite being a distance prequel to Ninja Gaiden. Pure action doesn't sell. KT even crowned Rise of the Ronin as a financial success and saw major profits in the fiscal year of that game's release.

Platinum? Sure. NG? It's one of those series that many claim to love but only a few actually play NG. Team Ninja itself? They've seen a lot of success post-Nioh 1. Even their most niche game, Stranger of Paradise has a dedicated following, and I'm starting to see it get really high placements in those FF tierlists even on sites and communities outside of /v/. People are warming up to it. Almost reminds me of how God Hand was treated when it launched.

I have no horse in this race as someone not really into action games, but the fact that I wouldn't have known about NG4's existence without /v/ probably has something to do with it. Ninja Gaiden doesn't hold the same status it used to, thanks to Gen Z and Alpha having zero respect for the history of vidya.A new game in the series no longer turns heads in the way it once might, so some sort of marketting push was needed.

I like the game, the animations are so fast. It's very stylish overall.

I don't think that's true at all. Even if something like God of War Raganarok's peak on Steam has less than 1/3rd of Stellar Blade's peak, that doesn't mean God of War is a flop when it sold 15 million copies overall which is many times higher than Stellar Blade's sales on PC and PS5 combined. You wouldn't know that if you just looked at Steam numbers. The Nioh series has exceed 7 million in sales last year, but you wouldn't think that's the case if you just looked at Steam numbers since none of the Nioh games come close to Stellar Blade's peak.

/v/ has an insane bias towards PC gaming and completely disregards that a lot of people play on consoles. Certain games sell better on consoles than on PC. God of War, Nioh and even those Bamco anime arena fighters sells better on Playstation. Stuff like Stellar Blade sells better on PC because it appeals to the Chinese market. They love ultra-flashy, yet ultra-impractical battle animations with unecessary flips and tons of sparks. Just look at any Elden Ring Chinese weapon mod. Eve herself appeals to Chinese beauty standards. Shift-Up even announced that they were confident that Stellar Blade would do better on PC. Sounded like a bold exclamation to make, but it's very realistic if you understand the market. Not because Playstation is dying but because Stellar Blade appeals to the Chinese market.

When it comes to Sony being a kiss of death, that's only partially true. FFVII Rebirth and XVI would have done better if they were on PC day-in-date. Concord was a flop. But at the same time, Sony's had multiple games hit the 10+ million mark. They finally found their successful live service game in Helldivers 2. PS5 is selling well. Their PC ports are treated like extra income whereas MS needs those Steam sales. Sony's had plenty of misteps, but they've also seen a lot more success than MS this gen. MS keeps fucking up. I can't even remember their last success.
