I never pre-order games. But I bought Elemental: Reforged in Early Access to support the project, because I really loved Fallen Enchantress.

Coliseum in gaiden was part of the main story and frankly fantastic. K2 had a good one, too. I don't remember the substories in gaiden. Strongly disliked them in iw, did like them in lad.
