I want to get into the Tomb Raider games. Is the collection the best way to play them?

Yes. The og pc releases with fan patches are fine too. So are the console versions. Hopefully someone will post that pasta with all the GitHub links so you can look at it and think "uh I'll just try the remaster thanks".

yeah the Aspyr remasters are great, play in order, i'm an OG fag and i think the modern controls are great

It's censored, but not too badly. Depends on how much you care about getting the pure experience.

Overall Tomb Raider is frustrating to play if you're trying to get through the game quickly. Approach it as an adventure game with an open mind and you'll have more fun exploring.

I think the 1-3 remasters are fine overall. But my biggest complaint with this collection is that Tomb raider 1 and Tomb Raider 2 do not have the original gamepad controller layouts. All three games were ported to the same enhanced 'TR3' engine; and because of that, they all share the Tomb Raider III controller layouts. The original Tomb Raider has R2 and L2 left and right side step buttons , L1 walk button and R1 look buttons. Tomb Raider 2, removes L2 and R2 side stepping for just a single side step button, to make room for the 'quick use' flares. Tomb raider 3 combines the sidestep and walk into one button. To make room for Crawl and Sprint. In this collection, all of the games are homogenized to the TRIII control scheme. You do get use to it. But it was annoying for people who grew up with the original control schemes. This is mostly just an issue I have with TR1 and TR2. TRIII is fine.

Yes, there is. I bought the first trilogy hoping it will get better to support classic Lara but then they covered up teen Lara's cleavage in the next one so fuck them. Shame.

Definitely, they're remasters done right. Just acknowledge that the control scheme takes some getting used to and that it's a 'precision platformer' about careful movement, combat included, with lots of patient exploring and backtracking. But once you get it down they're great games with a rewarding sense of difficulty.

When it comes to classic games I'm usually a purist and say play the original in as close to how it was intended to be played as possible which usually means either original hardware or emulation with minimal enhancements but for TR 1-6 the remasters are a really convenient way to play them all and the new graphics aren't that offensive considering how primitive the games looked due to engine limitations.
