Final Fantasy was practically the gold standard for JRPGs up through FFX. FFXI could've been played off as an experiment, since everyone was making MMOs at the time. Meanwhile FFXII wasn't terrible, but it didn't renew confidence in the franchise. Something to keep in mind is that there was 5 years between FFX and FFXII. For comparison, FFVII, VIII, IX, and X came out within the span of 4 years. So FFXII needed to be a home run to justify that big wait, but it was just okay. So then after another 4 years, FFXIII came along and was actively shit. The plot was shit, the characters were shit, and gameplay was shit. It had nothing going for it besides looking very pretty. It completely nuked the franchise and Squeenix hasn't been able to reclaim the throne since then. The name still lingers in the minds of people who experienced that golden age, but Squeenix has been struggling to even grasp the identity of the franchise since then, let alone actually make a decent game.
If you ask me, Bravely Default is the best Final Fantasy game made in the last 20 years because it actually had a better grasp on what Final Fantasy is supposed to be than Final Fantasy itself has had in all these years.
