I played Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy VII. Then I ignored the series for 20 years until Remake came out.

That said, that old games are charming, but modern Final Fantasy is substantially more prestigious and fun. Square Enix made the right decision in ditching the antiquated combat system.

New FF game coming out was like the second coming of Jesus for young me. But then 11 was an MMO when our house didn't even have internet, 12 was really boring, 13 outright painful, and that was three strikes and out. My interest in the series just never recovered. I did play the later games too, but the magic is gone.

Gay looking girly men aside, the fantasy settings were some of the most memorable. Ivalice, Midgar and Zanarkand were all places that drew me in and made me want to explore and know more about them.

Final Fantasy only held "prestige" because you were a dumb kid who hadn't yet realized that there wasn't anything special about FF games. They were just another series of okay RPGs with better brand recognition.

After twenty years of playing other RPGs, I look back and realize how many entries in the FF franchise had mid-mechanics and meh stories.

NTA but people were already wary of FF by the time FF12 was released. People weren't nearly as excited for 12 as they were for 10.
Anonymous No.724742157 [Report]
now? no, not really. It's broken down to a point where people specify the title they're referring to when they say FF. It's never "I like FF" it's "I like FF7" or whatever.
14 being such an enormous company-shattering failure really did a number. They fucked over 11 to shill 14, 13 came out after years of development and was basically just a movie game that never opened up (gran pulse was really the only remotely open area and you can do all it's content in a couple hours), 14 flopped so hard it almost killed the company and they re-developed it entirely as a wow clone, 15 had similar issues to 13 and the dismal display of 13's sales (though 13-2 and LR did okay after for re-using assets), so they basically culled the planned 13 world expansion and turned it into 15, but they didn't have the rest of the world set up. Plans to use FF0's world as a basis for 15 (according to IR) fell through, so they basically just had no lore for 15 at all ready a year before launch, so they started rushing to license and commission movies and books and comics and manga to flesh out the world, except they all came out in the period surrounding the game's release, and it just made people pissed that they had to watch a movie, read a manga, and then just fucking GUESS to figure out half of the story and motivations of characters. also the DLCs were just content ripped right out of the game and huge portions of their assets and code and level geometries and combat systems were ingame from day 1.

tl;dr no
not even a chance. 16 wasn't even a final fantasy game, if you didn't say it was one, people wouldn't assume it's one, they'd think it's a generic fantasy game.

Final Fantasy is a completely dead IP that continues to exist in a zombie state. The old heads at Square Enix that keep working on it are mentally stuck in the war zone of being a Japanese developer in the 2000s, back when game journalists just hated the Japanese and their style of creative expression. (They still do, but they mask it and tone it down.)
Final Fantasy post-XIII is an IP incredibly insecure about being Japanese, that has no connection to the appeal of the old games. Even attempts at nostalgia baiting like FFVIIR are tainted by this insecurity.

Absolutely not. Here's their timeline:
>Release FFXIII to hugely divisive reception
>Decide to give that divisive game a whole trilogy (something they've never done before)
>Release XIV, their second MMO, it fails and needs to be shut down and fixed
>Spends 10 years working on an incomplete XV. It's story makes no sense and the gameplay is horrendous.
>Panics and spends the next 15 years slowly remaking FFVII
>In the midst of all this just quietly release a NEW game that gets forgotten about because everything is still FFVII

Once you go to remakes it's a full admission that you don't have any ideas and are creatively bankrupt. FF is dead.

13 was always meant to be a "multimedia series", versus 13 was announced before 13 came out, in case you forgot.
In fact, it was like 95% xbox 360 and MS dominance in the west that fucked 13 over so hard, 13 and 13-2 were originally intended to be one single entry, you can find the cut entire seventh ark, and half a dozen bosses that ended up as contents in 13-2. Xbox would have needed ten or more discs to get it done, so they demanded the games be split up, and threatened to not allow squenix to release on their platform if they didn't force the same for sony too. MS was insanely jealous in gen 7, it was crazy. It's why MKX took so long, they straight up blacklisted netherealm after kratos was in mk9. Without that, 13 still wouldn't have been good, don't get me wrong, but it would have been a lot less poorly received going forward, without that shitty cliffhanger ending.

Replace FF1 with FF10 and that’s been my FF experience as well. Final Fantasy was practically the gold standard for JRPGs up through FFX. FFXI could've been played off as an experiment, since everyone was making MMOs at the time. Meanwhile FFXII wasn't terrible, but it didn't renew confidence in the franchise. Something to keep in mind is that there was 5 years between FFX and FFXII. For comparison, FFVII, VIII, IX, and X came out within the span of 4 years. So FFXII needed to be a home run to justify that big wait, but it was just okay. So then after another 4 years, FFXIII came along and was actively shit. The plot was shit, the characters were shit, and gameplay was shit. It had nothing going for it besides looking very pretty. It completely nuked the franchise and Squeenix hasn't been able to reclaim the throne since then. The name still lingers in the minds of people who experienced that golden age, but Squeenix has been struggling to even grasp the identity of the franchise since then, let alone actually make a decent game.
If you ask me, Bravely Default is the best Final Fantasy game made in the last 20 years because it actually had a better grasp on what Final Fantasy is supposed to be than Final Fantasy itself has had in all these years.

This is the most confusing shit. How do you fail to grasp the identity of a franchise as simple as FF? Magitek setting that's whimsical and fun to explore, but has a hidden darkness behind it, and a group of plucky characters, unlikely allies brought together by a common purpose that starts small, but eventually escalates to battling a god-like entity that threatens the world. Throw in a waifu with the power of destiny, turn-based combat, summons, and you have your game. Hell, be fancy and build on FFX/FFX-2 and have a really juicy end-/postgame that tests your understanding of the game's mechanics for some extra longevity.

Yeah, it's not a complicated formula, but Squeenix has this idea in their head that every Final Fantasy game needs to be pushing the boundaries in some way. They've been chasing the high that FF7 gave them nearly 30 years ago. But after FF10, there wasn't much more boundary to push besides making the visuals more flashy. And so that's practically all they've done for 20 fucking years. They can't accept that they need to go back to basics. FF16 is what they think getting back to basics looks like and that should tell you everything you need to know about how broken their mindset is.

He became less involved in the creative process, but Sakaguichi was involved from a producer standpoint. And really, that is something SE can't seem to get right. And he wasn't really wrong about high production value CGI film being the future (look at Marvel), he just got in it too soon when it was too costly. Though those kinds of ventures are also what push things forward, and one thing people say about SW was that it had amazing effects and detailed rendering.

X’s dub is awkward due to how they had to match the timing of the Japanese voices like in anime, and the translation of some lines is a bit direct and sounds awkward spoken aloud. You can tell just how novel full voice acting in a videogame was by how clunky the execution is. But the casting is actually pretty good. It’s not a bunch of the usual anime dub VAs that shit up the industry. And there are moments where it’s honestly better than the Japanese audio. And I despise English dubs, so I’m not saying that lightly.
One of the best moments in the whole game (the Yunalesca encounter) is an odd mix of 10/10 acting, and the typical awkwardness of the game’s VA work. Auron in particular is one of the only characters in Japanese media that’s better in English.

I don't mind it as the first stab for going fully 3d, but I do agree there was a lot lost with it. Would be cool to see what a FF would look like if they just kept going more in the direction of 6/7/8/9.
