If you wanna play power builds the best strat is using quick recovery to shrug off item hits, slipstream bounty to gain rings when slipstreaming and ring gain boost to speed up when gaining rings. So whenever you get hit you instantly recover and quickly go back to full speed with the rings you get for slipstreaming (or any other rings you pick up).

Watch out with collisions because power currently doesn't affect collision power so you'll get pushed aside by literally anyone. Power only affects hitstun reduction and ring loss prevention in collisions against walls and players.

You're wrong and you know it, you just say it to excuse ultimate charge cheese. Even if items were weak, without it you will still get hit on the last lap and drop a position or two, so you will still use it because in your mind that's unfair and annoying. Face it, the only way you'd drop it is if the items were pathetic to the point getting hit doesn't matter and getting direct hit by anything would rarely if ever make anyone lose a spot, at which point most of the items and gadgets have no value and it is no longer a kart racer. Ultimate charge needs a nerf and it hopefully will get one next patch or the game's going to die.

Ultimate charge wouldn't be so much of a problem if the game visually indicated it's active with real consistency

It is still a kart racer even if there is some counter play to items. The goal of items is to keep tension and not to outright determine the outcome. This game more than any other kart racer is super punishing in the last stretch if you haven't held the right items for the last lap or gotten lucky at the end to get what you need. If they make it where going into the last stretch without a defensive item isn’t practically a guaranteed last place you would absolutely see people picking a faster build over one that can give them a shield or one that can give a better chance of having the right items. They should nerf the cause of the problem rather than the response to it. However, the courses are designed where that will be almost impossible. I say all this as someone who doesn’t do any better when using level 4 boost and would benefit from it being nerfed.

Note that this is in reference to while you're drifting, not the boost you get after drifting.

If you want to reduce incoming stun, Quick Recovery in a Power or Handling vehicle will help. There's a local sperg that swears up and down that QR is not worth it, but in terms of actually negating damage after it hits you, nothing does better point for point. It's the reason everyone pairs it with Slipstream Bounty and Ring Gain Boost (additional acceleration sources). You already know the two other routes (ignore damage before it hits you, or be immune by hoarding items until the end)
