no I really don't think it did and you even contradicted yourself in the very next sentence. I loved xbox back in the day and have a lot of good memories of xbl shenanigans but in retrospect they were greedy fucks back then. they had monetized dashboards since the blades UI then every time they updated the UI your dashboard purchases became less relevant, either becoming buggy or flat out unusable. microsoft points were very very jewish in how most purchases would leave you just a little bit off of another purchase, which would encourage you to spend more. to add, when netflix first came out, for a while xbox live gold was required to use netflix, microsoft wasn't shy about doing double subs. thinking back I wish I had a ps3 back then, I didn't really care for gears and always played halo at my friends house anyway.

Xbox d-pad is kinda ass, prefer playing these on PS2 or emulating. Did play X2 tho, game reminds me of Twin Snakes in that incorporating mechanics from a later game without balancing anything just broke the THPS1 levels lol.

One thing that is kind of forgotten these days is how good it was the xbox came with a hard drive for save games.

Memory cards for PS2 and GC were insanely overpriced and you essentially never had to think about it with the xbox because it had room for thousands of save files.

Remember, the xbox was the same price as the PS2 and completely blew it away as far as hardware went. At least the gamecube was significantly cheaper.

My dad got an Xbox for me and my brother cheap as fuck, five games, two controllers, and the DVD remote for like five hundred dollars or something. I look at SOCOM more like how I look at Counter-Strike. I think Ghost Recon is going for a very different thing and have actually enjoyed the knock off wigger 25-to-Life on Xbox as a Socom alternative, online in that game is surprisingly fun.

From my limited knowledge but searching for answers over the years, the original Xbox had a weird development process without a ton of oversight which gave the team designing it more creative freedom. I’m not sure if Microsoft had that much confidence in it and I think the higher ups just saw it as a toy so didn’t care to get involved. A lot of the guys working on it were passionate about games. you can find a lot of info about it online. Been a while since I read about it. One of the Xbox guys had to argue with bill gates supposedly over adding high speed internet support to the Xbox because gates wss convinced there were still many years of dialup ahead and that’s one funny thing I remember reading.

Idk anout that one chief, I played the ps2 at my friends house and something about the console always seemed boring or just not interesting. I chose to get the GameCube first and then chose the Xbox over the ps2 despite playing on before trying the Xbox. It was just more fun. Console controller brand entire aesthetic everything felt like it has soul. That’s why I picked it. the ps2 (at the time) I remember thinking was “neat” but not something felt I needed to have.


ps2 has lots of good games but most of them look like crap because of the hardware, which isnt the devs fault, but diminishes the experience of every game. and it’s enormous library is filled with an obscene amount of slop titles for every good game. I consider it the Apple iTunes game store of consoles. It was the cheapest and easiest console to make games for. Had lots of great games but never felt like there was any coherent quality control or brand or identity like the other consoles. You can say the ps2 was better but you can’t say it had more soul. It felt the most corporate and sanitized.

Yes and no, depend of the game, it's still p2p mostly.
The difference was mostly coming from the robustness of the service itself (constant update, dashboard, features (sending vocal and text message, something that was released close to when H2 launched, etc....) and strong stability overall with multiple server relay for good connection).

In comparison, the PSN of the PS2 was absolute dog shit, take ages to connect, get disconnected very frequently at primes hours (EU), average ping was atrocious, computer network sharing completely broken etc....

So the price was making sense, even more that at that time, monthly subscription for MMO and other type of games that bring constant update was the norm.

The OG Xbox is also very fun for modding. Its the only console that you can just screw open with no clips to break.
You can even upgrade the RAM from 64mb to 128mb or even 264mb if you have advanced soldering skills. With an Modchip flashed with CerBios and a HDMI adapter cable you can play games like Amped 2, Tony Hawk and Freedom Fighters in 16:9 720p on a modern TV.

I exchanged the fan of my Xbox with a 70mm silent Nexus Fan. My Xbox is now quiet like a Smartphone when I play games.

I know the fan in mine eventually died and it didn't seem to have much of an impact but by that stage (it was over 10 years old) I wasn't using it much.

The first 1.0 Version had a GPU fan which was extremly loud and unnecessary. In 1.1 to 1.6 this fan was removed with a bigger heatsink. But all still have the one CPU fan at backside of the Xbox, which is important.
Also you should stay away from the 1.6 Versions because they are harder to mod. They even removed the empty RAM slots.
