I think being "on-model" is less important than matching the character's vibe and being artistically consistent with any other characters shown, if that makes sense.
Like, picrel is "offmodel", but it's consistent with the general characterization of both parties involved in a way that makes it feel more like an artstyle shift for the actual characters than different characters cosplaying.
