When was the last time you actually followed the hype cycle for a game or pre-ordered a game?
Anonymous No.724800791 [Report]
the most hyped I allow myself to get for a game these days is putting it on my steam wishlist so I know when it comes out, but then I don't bother buying it until later anyway
last time I preordered a game was trauma team for the wii in may 2010, back when amazon would give you discounts for preordering

Hype cycles are literally for kids. Fun memories getting hyped for halo 3 and brawl but times have changed and so have I. The idea of getting worked up in anticipation of playing a game is ridiculous to me. Games aren't good enough, generally. But even something as promising a slam dunk as elden ring and Kirby air riders, while I'll definitely play, I can't get excited about their release. I'm not a kid waiting for recess.

I pre-ordered once upon a katamari

Bloodborne and I was already very cautious about it because Dark Souls 2 preorder burned me fucking hard.
I almost preordered STALKER 2 on 5 separate occassions when I had the money to and I'm glad I didn't. I still bought it recently and enjoyed it a lot after all the fixes they did but I wouldn't have had that experience or enjoyment if I had preordered it and I would've been souring my own enjoyment the entire time.

pikmin 4, i waited 10 years for a reboot disguised as a sequel and i was blinded by nostalgia and starvation, though normally i dont really feed into hype all that much, usually i can tell from the get go whether i'd really like something or not, and since i dont normally wanna buy {something i wont consistently come back to for fun once the novelty wears off} i rarely make regretful decisions, i just didnt think pikmin, the series defined by its replayability, would be an open world trend chaser thats so panned out and hollow itd be obnoxious to try to actually go for a "high score"
miyamoto really does seem to care more about whether a game will be "popular" than something passionate, and pikmin 4 really awakened me to that. he even outwardly said he would assert himself more in the dev cycle of pikmin 4 than the others and the result was such a far cry from what i loved from the series

i am thinking to buy the early access to eternity egg, it looks really fun from all the gameplay ive seen, trying to figure out what was happening on screen made me super immersed into the controlset of the game before i even played a single frame of it, so im really looking forward to it

>>724806453
i did follow the dev cycle! its hard to put into words how interesting it is because its usually seemingly mundane things that only really matter once you immerse yourself in it like the HUD changing from a disembodied head to a TV or gameplay switching from collectathon-ish to a "solo racing game" kinda deal

My last ever pre-order was for Arkham Knight on PC.

When EA acquired them they basically forced Maxis to shit it out even though all of the ideas they'd had planned were only partially-coded, which caused them to throw out huge parts of the stuff they'd been promising in interviews an demonstrations. The original vision of the game was meant to have 10x the content and that's a conservative number, it was a completely groundbreaking vision for the time. What we got is still alright but yeah, it totally killed all future hype for me vidya-wise.

I was trying to think back to a game I legitimately was hyped for releasing. There's been games I've taken a day or two off work to play, games I look forward to, but it's been at least a decade or more since I remember following press releases and such on a game in anticipation of it dropping.

I remember FFXI was probably the first time I was actually involved in hype, I'd buy magazines to read the previews on it, I'd pour through the internet to find information on it, and me and my friends in school would plan what classes we'd play and what we'd do. I'm not sure if I waited in anticipation of a game like that again, although there have been numerous that I'm interested in playing on release.

one step from eden and the sequel duelists of eden
turned out pretty well despite me hating pretty much everything that's come out in the past decade. really fun games, spent hundreds of hours in each, just REALLY wish I had bought the plushies they made because I dont think it's popular enough to get resellers. overall it was time and money well spent!
before that? I pre ordered borderlands 3 like a big fucking retard, i didnt really look into what the creators behind the series were. just played two and the presequel and naively assumed it was gonna be fun. biggest piece of shit I've ever played.
I cant really recall following hype cycles for recent games because they tend to disappoint me quickly and I forget about them or it's something I've seen on the thumbnail of a video I dont watch or a thread I dont click on. I think I was following elden ring for all of five minutes until I saw the gameplay and realized it wasn't improving on ds3's in ny meaningful way.
in the past I pre ordered several games, all of them I genuinely liked so BL3 was my first and biggest burn. I was thinking of pre ordering the sonic racing game after playing the demo but decided not to. glad I did, racing games aren't my thing and I'm sure I would've gotten bored of it quickly.
I'm definitely looking into code vein two though, only thing that's about to come out that doesn't look terrible.

I'll post only a little bit of what I'm mad about because the point of what I'm getting at can just be seen in the differences between designs before Aonuma and after his ascension, when we're balls fucking deep into it in 2025
Before Wind Waker, that lizalfos in my previous post was what Zelda looked like.
I don't like agreeing with Miyamoto, but learning that even he at the last fucking minute was like
>ne chotto yahari can't we just make it a realistic Zeruda game style?

I agree with you, but Wind Waker had a good style in a vacuum, just because they went cartoony and more appealing to their main audience (very small children), doesn't mean it's because of wind-waker.
Did you play TP? It came out afterwards and had a completely different artstyle. Not nearly as dark or dreadful as OOT or MM, but different.
I have no issue with Zelda games having different tones or styles, though I agree that the modern ones are stock-standard safe, sterilized slop.

That's the entire fucking problem.
Yeah, man. I played TP. I also know why they made TP-- They made it because they were fucking scared they lost their North American audiences, and they were fucking right to be. Miyamoto brought out TP to thunderous applause, and when the fucking dev team was getting ready to capitalize and made TP 2, Miyamoto said the famous fucking words
>Why
>Are you making twairaighto princessu 2
>when we areeady have twairaighto princessu?
>Now turn that shit into Link's Crossbow Training
and then we get Skyward Sword, and then we get Breath of the Wild, and then we get Breath of the Wild 2, and when the fuck am I going to get my """Second""" twilight princess when I want Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask--
like do you see the fucking issue here? I'm supposed to be a fan.

You don't want them to make another OOT or MM, I promise you.
There's no universe where it could be good, they genuinely don't have the ability, technology, or talent to innovate in the way they did at that time. The only possible scenario that could come from them attempting to make a 'real' Zelda is a lot of pissed off 30 year olds and a lot of confused, bored children.

if i'm following this correctly, you've been saying that
>Miyamoto didn't like WW art style and made TP to appease the NA audience
>He denied making TP2 because they already made TP
>but he also decided to go back to making games like WW despite not liking and this would cause him to contradict his problem with making a game he already made
I don't understand the logic here. How is it WW fault if miyamoto didn't want to make the same thing and then went on to make something. wouldn't that mean it wasn't inspired by WW?
>Links crossbow training
The only thing I've heard about that was from the DYKG video where they mentioned that Miyamoto wanted to create a side game, and everyone suggested ideas that basically sounded like TP2, something he didn't ahve in mind. Basically he wanted to create a spinoff and not a mainline game. If that's true then there never was a TP2 as it was never on the table, and conversation is just misinterpreted.

The other guy is right. In a vacuum, WW had more in common with OoT and MM than it did with BotW. WW was an anime-influenced cartoon aimed towards the 8-12 demographic, like its predecessors, while BotW was made for normies. I don't even think BotW is that bad but its tonally very different from Zelda games of the 80s-2000s. Skyward Sword was the game that started the shift in that direction IMO.

I bought into the hype for Halo Infinite, sadly. The beta seemed promising and it really looked like they were going in a good direction with things, even with the shortcomings in what should be day one features. I didn't pre-order it, but I did pick it up on the first week when people were saying it was good. Though it became clear very quickly that the game was going to suck ass. Once I beat the campaign I haven't touched it since and have negative interest in CE remake based on their recent gameplay videos. Before that though, I can't remember the last game I pre-ordered or got hype for... maybe Mass Effect 3? Which also burned me. Now I just have a collection of indie games on my steam wishlist that I keep tabs on and wait for a sale.

>Miyamoto didn't like WW art style and made TP to appease the NA audience
yes
>He denied making TP2 because they already made TP
yes, fuck Aonuma
>but he also decided to go back to making games like WW despite not liking and this would cause him to contradict his problem with making a game he already made
>I don't understand the logic here. How is it WW fault if miyamoto didn't want to make the same thing and then went on to make something. wouldn't that mean it wasn't inspired by WW?
The dominos fell. Aonuma makes WW, even fucking says something like
>I took a rot of riberties (lol), I wouldn't be surprised if dis is my rast Zeruda game
and then next thing I know it's been twenty fucking more years of the guy.
Miyamoto: "I killed their ideas"

That picture basically killed pokemon for me. I coped along with X and Y with "it's the move to 3d let them get used to it" then this abortion happened and the excuse was "people play phonegames". THEN WHY THE FUCK EVEN MAKE A GAME IN THE FIRST PLACE???
