So my wired Xbox 360 controller I've been using to play both Xbox 360 and Steam games is no longer working well, keeps dropping inputs. I still have the wireless 360 controller my console came with for 360 games, but I can't use hat for PC, and buying a wired xbox 360 controller now is largely unfeasable due to the market being flooded with low quality fakes and ebay sellers posting pictures of genuines and sending you fakes.

Is an Xbox One controller an acceptable substitute for a Xbox 360 controller as far as PC gaming goes? Is it even feasible to find an Xbone controller today?

Xbone controller is inferior in every way to an xbox series controller.

You can, you just need to buy the 360 dongle

Most games that work with 360 controllers are gonna work with One controllers, the API that handles controller inputs supports all of them, if the dev for whatever reason used some bespoke solution, you can usually just rely on SteamInput. Do keep in mind that early One controllers require their own dongle, separate from the 360 dongle. Newer ones work with either the One dongle or Bluetooth

Ideally I'd prefer a wired connection, presumably USB, than a wireless connection. I presume the Xbone controller can connect to a PC via USB?

I've found my Switch Pro Controller, which honestly hasn't seen much use since I got it, works for some newer games, but the lack of analogue triggers like my 360 controller had is a big enough issue for me to keep looking for a better replacement.

Early xbone controllers had incredibly shitty bumpers as well. Also you CAN use any Xbone controller with PC without a dongle, you just need a cable. Just get a series controller, USB-C, guaranteed bluetooth, better d-pad, better grip and trigger textures, etc makes it better. There's also a shit ton of great third party controllers nowadays.

I have to antirecommend the XBone controller; two of mine went to shit.

Things like this make me feel not keeping up with the Xbox brand after the 360 was a mistake, I can't seperate the fact from the opinion.

Just get like the 8bitdo 2c off amazon for 20 dollars and have a controller that will last you a long time instead of spending 70 dollars on a shitbox controller that stick drifts after 3 months.

If you just want wired, then yeah, both early and later revisions can connect via USB, do keep in mind that One controllers used Micro USB, if you really want USB-C, and no dongle on the off-chance you want to go wireless, then listen to >>724826075 and get a Series controller

Is that to say the Series controller works the same way with USB?

>>724826510
I've never bought or used an 8-bitdo controller before, my primary concerns there would be physical quality (if the're comparable to the sturdyness one would expect from an official Xbox controller) and if Steam would recognize it in the same way it would an Xbox 360 controller.

Yeah, also same support level game-wise (Works with any Xinput game, supported via SteamInput if the game uses something else)

Addendum: 8bitdo controllers (And pretty much all newer third party controllers) support Xinput, so they should be compatible with all games that support Xbox controllers

Input types throw me off a bit.

When I first tried my Steam Pro Controller to see if it'd be an acceptable substitute for the wired 360 controller (before I realized the analogue trigger issue), I tested it with two games, on released in 2016 and one released this year. It worked the exact same way as the 360 controller with the newer game, but when I tried it with the 2016 game it swapped the A-B and X-Y buttons around, which was to be expected. I saw Steam had an option to switch that, but when I toggled it, basically the issue switch from the older game to the newer game.

I assume this is a Switch-specific issue because Nintendo has to do everything their own way, or at least I hope so.

Xbone controller is way better than 360. The 360's dpad was absolute horseshit.

the xbone controller is uncomfortable to hold and its d-pad is still bad, even if it is an improvement.

Do you feel that way in comparison to the 360 pad, or xbox controllers in general?

Yo, OP.
I was in the the exact same situation as you a few years ago, and instead of jumping on the latest $90 microsoft trash, I decided that I'd try out one of those chinese bootleg 360 controllers that you can get for like $15 on amazon. I was actually quite impressed with the quality; the plastic is noticeably cheaper, and the buttons and triggers are definitely squishier, but besides that functionality is spot on. I suspect that they're literally made on the same molds that the originals were. I'd recommend at least trying one of those before wasting your money on a Xbone controller that you probably wont even like.

Kinda but not exacly, it uses DirectInput, which is a bit older, some older games are only gonna support it, while with newer games it's either both, or Xinput only. Newer third party controllers let you switch between both, mostly because the controller supporting DirectInput lets it be compatible with Playstation and Nintendo. If you're ever stuck with only a DirectInput controller, your best bet is to enable SteamInput, or use any of the multiple programs that do the same thing as it

Well the wired 360 controller didn't give me this issue, my ideal replacement would be the same way, and obviously that means it's not the Steam Pro Controller. I can only assume the Xbone and Series controllers act the same as the 360 controller.

The 360 controller feels specifically sculpted to fit into the human hand while the One and Series controllers feel more rigid, less comfortable.

idk why people are against wireless 360 controllers. I've had issues with bluetooth controllers but my wireless 360 controller + usb adapter has been rock solid.

For me, it's batteries and the fact I don't want to have to buy additional equipment just to be able to use the controller with my PC.

I still have my stock wireless 360 controller, but it's only good for using on my 360. Don't know what I'm going to do if that wears itself out like my wired one did.
