I'm torn between Sonic 2 & 3. I like 2's levels, but I really enjoy 3's special stages.

I played this game as a kid but these days if I try to play it I drop it at the second level or so. fuck this game I hate the constant switching and this is yet another 3D sonic game where the emeralds are part of the plot instead of something you can collect in levels and become super sonic in actual gameplay so that also rubbed me the wrong way.

Those are great games. 2 filtered me hard with the special stages and Metroplois,but it's still a lot of fun. 3&K is one of the best games ever made. I'd say 3&K, CD, and Sonic x Shadow Generations are my favorite games. Almost all the games in the series have something special about them, but those 3 are the ones I find myself enjoying playing the most. Special mention to Triple Trouble 16 bit remake.
