When you play as Jesse William's character, Markus, doing that fetch quest, fetching the paint for fucking Bishop. You saw real people out in the street messing with Markus. Here you witness what kind of discrimination the droids are getting from humankind. But you can make out that these people have lost their jobs to androids, hence the hostility against the droids.

Todd here showcases that consequence directly. Todd is practically jobless because of the androids. He has overdue bills. One can assume the actual wife and kid left him because of that. This is what those big corpos and droids has done to human families on a personal level.

By having Kara and Alice at home, and him breaking down during dinner, it shows that there's still some humanity left in him. All he wanted was family. Which he lost because of the droids overtaking everyone's jobs. Him being out of job, was further worsened by that new drug compound, the Red Ice, which is also a key part of the narrative throughout the game.

So it's as if Lorkhan was the reason we have free will, and the ability to achieve awakening while still realizing the self, within the all. In TES, the Demiurge is capable of both benevolence and malevolence.

And you could see it in Detroit. When the Elijah had Connor point the gun on the menu screen lady droid. It's free will.

They wanted assistants that had the intelligence of humans, yes, because the world spent the last 100,000 years being built around human interfaces. It was easier to make a robot that thinks like a human than to make robot-interfaces for every human-facing aspect of civilization.
The system just ended up too complex that you couldn't just cut out their emotional processing to turn them into obedient robots. They always had that ghost in the machine.
