Just one of the many things "borrowed" from the recently released and highly popular Neon Genesis Evangelion. It's also why they styled the remake series initially on the Eva Rebuilds.

It was a trend in their cultures, peaked in the mid-late 90s. There was NGE, and also Xenogears that draws from all that as well.
