FF had a huge identity crisis after X and XI came out and felt the mainline titles needed to not only be at the forefront of graphical presentation but also to radically change the underlying gameplay systems at the expense of the core audience. XII is kind of an odd one out because it still has some of those trappings of classic FF but the ship had fully sailed under the chokehold of the XIII trilogy and the XIV 1.0 failure.
