Why does far future humanity constantly get DOMINATED by alien empires?

we as a species are extremely territorial and will engage in violence to protect our land, our property, our way of life. Our various conflicts as a result hampers our ability to become a space-faring species

The common theme here is that these alien empires are already space faring, often long before humanity was. Assuming they had a similar technological and societal path as us, the natural assumption would be that this is an alien empire that came out victorious over all it's enemies, and now has a mass of wartime technology that has been used, counteracted, improved and perfected well and truly beyond what humanity has achieved. And so we become the bottom of the galaxy in most fiction.

tl;dr fiction writers fantasize about being stomped on by a military boot.

one of the trope I love the most is using what drives a human (ambition, power, wanderlust) and using that as a funnel about why an alien civilization light find us interesting or dangerous.
Now, of course, that trope can be completly destroyed with the "le human is bad" shit, but if written right you have can create a compelling story where both empire can understand theses goals or difference and either work toward unity or use them as a mean for war as why we're ultimately incompatible.

We assume that anything more powerful than us would enslave or destroy us. I believe it's overtaken sci-fi because of ideology and cynicism, that alien life would be like-minded rational actors and view other species as competitors and threats to its continued survival. It does assume that alien life conceptualises, rationalises and views reality in the same way as humanity.

Because if you start with humanity being dominated you, as the human MC, can be first in line at turning that around and making humanity dominate the aliens by the end.
