If you're a casual who's just checking the game out skip everything and pirate Rebirth with every DLC. If you like what you play then you can check out flash with its DLC, it's still the same core gameplay with less items and a generally easier experience due to the game being smaller and having less bullshit all around and it has better atmosphere, graphics and music than rebirth with its flash jank being what holds it back the most.

I liked it, unless you have a particular flavor of autism, skip hard mode, it's shit on purpose to be funny.

Yes, skip flash. Rebirth was the polished version of the flash and then expansions started to build up on top of it, each expansion needing the previous one. I recommend you first buy just the vanilla Rebirth, play it through to the Chest and beat it couple of times. If you feel you want more, get all expansions up to Repentance.

Also the online multiplayer added in Repentance+ the free update, allows you to get boss marks in multiplayer. You can do challenge characters in multiplayer to get their mark and unlocks. Even if your character dies, it unlocks the stuff.

In multiplayer the first room has revival machine, 1st revive costs 10cents, the next one 11cents, the next one 12cents and so on. Killing boss of the floor revives all dead players. Bosses drop as many items as players.

In multiplayer if someone is playing T.Keeper, you will dive for the coins risking damage. Coins trump everythings. For Angel/Devil room save at least 30 coins, preferably 45 in case Devil offers good 30 coins item and good enough 15 coins item. Only the first item in boss drops costs money, the rest are free.

Kick T.Cain players in lobby, no need to humor them. If you see someone picking T.Lost, do notice you won't get HP up items, so you have to rely other means of raising health like HP up pills, Balls of Steel, Hierophant, any item that has secondary HP up and so on.

Devil Deals are better in multiplayer because more players, more health. Also more players, more chances to lose the Devil/Angel room chance anyway. You can use your excess health on Sac Rooms to produce Megan Satan key and chance to teleport to Devil/Angel room.

It's good to emoticon bomb before using bomb because other players might not pay attention to using bomb otherwise.

Not specified but the Switch, Xbox and PS updates are the Repentance+ update that's in beta on PC right now. During its beta the PC version has had I think 2 balancing and adjustments updates like taking Book of Shadows away from T Lost's item pool

Only play Isaac if you're ready to pour in literal thousands of hours on heavy RNG runs with quite bullshitty gameplay at many points and if you aren't affected by grossout content or religious mockery (idc what you retards say, Ed was being an edgelord when making this shit and his family trauma isn't an excuse)
It isn't as bad as something like Spelunky when it comes to having to invest time and effort but it still requires a lot of it, particularly later on once you get to shit like greedier mode or having to go through the alt routes with every character (some of which are quite difficult to play as)

Flash is like 10% of Rebirth. You don't even need to play Flash anymore unlike the other retarded anon said because Rebirth has a workshop, meaning you can just mod in the old music and fan graphics that look like Flash in without much issue. For instance Last Judgement is made by some of the new Repentance staff and resprites large parts of the game to look like the Repentance artstyle which is pretty much Flash pixelated

could someone explain to me how people end up logging thousands of hours in this game? I played for a few hours and beat the mom boss. I enjoyed what I played but I just don't see how there is enough game here to justify that many hours? What exactly do people do for so long? what is the appeal beyond like 5 hours?

Isaac is extremely limited at first, you need to beat Mom like 5 times and then Mom's Heart/It Lives like 11 to really start unlocking the rest of the game
90% of items, characters, stages and shit are locked and you need to work your ass off to unlock them (for instance, the "dangerous" variant of each stage is unlocked after beating every boss in the original stage and the Afterbirth variant is unlocked after specific conditions are met, and then the Repentance/AB- ones are unlocked through a whole other ordeal

The first Mom boss takes place on floor 6. The next final boss Mom's Heart/It lives takes place floor 8 and you need to kill it, what, 10-15 times for unlocks and opening path forward. After that floor 9 opens to Sheol and Cathedral. Killing each floor's boss 10 times opens Dark Room and the Chest. Angel Room Angel statues become bosses and killing 2 angels grant access to Mega Satan in Dark Room and Chest.

New challenges include Boss Rush (killing floor 6 boss in 20 minutes) and Hush (killing floor 8 boss in 30 minutes). The game adds Greed and Greedier mode requiring you to beat the modes with each character and fill the Greed Machine to 1000 coins for unlocks.

Repentance adds alt route (Sewer-Mines-Gehenna-Rotten Womb) and new final boss Mother. Beating Mother opens route to Home and new bosses Dogma and the Beast with Ultra Harbringers.

Then after normal routes there's Void and Delirium.

Fair enough considering again the investment necessary but trust me when I say that you haven't even come close to beating 5% of the game, you haven't even reached the end of the Issac/Satan routes (or standard routes really) since you haven't unlocked the proper final stages in each one (Chest/Dark Room) and hence not even the "final bosses" of each route, let alone the proper final boss of the standard game, Mega Satan (who isn't even technically that since you have a 50% chance of getting a portal to Delirium who IS the final boss gameplay wise. Though to get Delirium you need to beat Hush which requires speedrunning to Womb II and beating Mom's Heart/It Lives in a similar way you need to speedrun to Depths II and the Mom battle to get the Boss Rush)

It's not a real video game. There's no mechanical challenge whatsoever. It used to be memorizing what items do and how rooms are generated, but apparently the former has been optimised out and the reason you memorize modules is not because they are hard, but becaus you want to do them fast so idk what people do how, play through 30 minute games as the lost or whatever.

Star of Providence, Spelunky 2, and Nuclear Throne are all far superior roguelikes.

I just liked the mechanic of unlocking new items so getting all the achievements was fun and after that it became my go to game to play while listening to podcasts/yt vids in the background. I only do Eden streaks now (the character that always starts with randomized items and stats) and thus the hours easily pile up.

Anyways memorizing what items do was never the point, people used to check out the Isaac wiki or the platg website to see shit. Adding item descriptions is just a convenient thing that adds a mod which 90% of players have been using but in a way where it also means new items are hidden and it's way better implemented
Also haven't played SoP or NT but kek, Spelunky 2 is WAY more RNG based. Even just the base game is pure RNG and far more than Isaac, let alone reaching the proper end of the 100 Cosmic Ocean rounds which is pretty much pure luck. Thinking Isaac is less skillbased than that is pure ignorance

I recommend unlocking Lost's Holy Mantle through Greed Mode. With Holy Mantle the Lost is lot more durable and forgiving because 1 hit per room is super generous. Also if you don't have Mantle unlocked, you embarrass yourself in multiplayer when you go to mirror and you are the only one missing the mantle. The others see it and will think "wtf this guy doing multiplayer and bringing the squad down when he doesn't even have the Mantle unlocked?"

None of the post-it notes are hard enough that it takes more than a few tries for even the more difficult characters to get marks on them if skilled enough. It is challenging but generally not unfair outside of Delirium, as every other boss has distinct patterns that can recognized and taken advantage of.

Good players can make use of even generally-bad items, while bad players can only win when the RNG goes in their favor.

it's very much a different game made for different people unless you're playing (reworked) skully who was made to be like isaac and honestly they're the most fun character in the game
either way it's not *that* hard in general, anyone can beat monolith, chaosgod is arguably easier, and I bet most people could even beat oblivion if playing as overlord
