The combat has more variety because there’s greater enemy variety, you get OP stuff much later in the game, and the stance system was refined to be more of a multiple weapon system. All but one of the main bad guys are men, but there’s plenty female minor villains.

Hell, the bad guys faction actually puts recruits women in their ranks out of desperation, meanwhile, the faction you side with is an exclusively male faction. They don’t censor the hot springs either. She’s still nude there.

I’m a little further into the game (almost halfway through), and the only mention of anything even remotely “woke” is some people making fun of Atsu for being a female warrior and Atsu either humbling them, or her basically saying “I don’t give a shit about your opinion”.

It’s the most inoffensive thing imaginable. All but one of her trainers that actually teach her new weapons are male too. The only way you can really take offense to her is if you’re one of those people who just doesn’t want a female protagonist regardless of execution.

So far, I think it’s better than Tsushima. Though I do miss Tsushima’s bleak atmosphere, since Yōtei is a bit more lighthearted despite still having lots of dark moments and gore.

Also, considering you’re helping out Tokugawa, it makes sense you’d be helping the people trying to control the guns because disarming the populace was historically one of the Edo period shogunate’s policies. Plus, Atsu only supports them as a means to an end.

That's because back then (mid 00's) publishers wanted to maximize sex appeal in order to boost sales. Prince of Persia is a good example of this. It got so out of hand that even Farah in Sands of Time wasn't deemed sexy enough so they made the female characters in the sequel look like gigasluts.
The industry later grossly over corrected but the mid 00's was also an anomaly. I'm also purely talking about western studios here, Japanese studios followed a different path.

This is why the Karen Fukuhara mod would be perfect. She could look realistic, but still attractive (to say nothing for the character or behavior of the model/actress vs the one that is in GoY). Jin was not a bishounen and that was fine, but like the old samurai movies he was relatively 'ruggedly handsome' as protags of the era went. Even a lot of old Westerns had guys like Clint Eastwood who were not the dreamiest dreamboats in all of hollywood, but had a reasonably rough handsomeness (compared to the more intentionally ugly bad guys of the time) with the charisma to pull it off.

A lot of the problems with GoY's main character has to do with A) /v/'s knowledge of the actress who played her and the fact that she seems to have active contempt s B) the script seems like a worse version of AC Shadows with Naoe, lacking the depth or innovations of GoT and with C) Onryo Scream seems completely unearned in contrast to how Jin become the Ghost, which just makes things look girlbossy. Likewise some of the endings with GAY GAY GAY ADOPTING A SPUNKY GIRL TOGETHER GAY GAY GAY DID WE MENTION ATSU IS GAY feels like it was heavily invested from the actress' input.

The underlying beauty of the world itself, the setting etc.. feels solid as it did in Tsushima, and with the exception of Atsu having more conventional Shogunate-era Japanese cultural presence instead of Ainu (she plays a shamisen not the Ainu instrument pictured, and outside of I think one unlockable some anon said she doesn't have any garments with the pattern. Apparently she meets a character that has the distinctive lip tattoos but doesn't even have the small dot herself. We've yet to see the Legends mode at launch so I really hope to fuck they bring a lot of traditional kamui stuff from Ainu legends etc), its just some of the other stuff about the main character and her story that seem to really undermine things vs Tsushima.

The game is pretty good but really kind of forgettable. The story sucks but the way the open world all fits together is even better than the first. Combat is only slightly better but also feels harder. I think sucker punch is a really talented studio, I hope they can come back from a bit of a whiff here. I'd like to see their take on an open world scifi take for the next gen, they could mog naughty dogs retarded attempt easily I bet in terms of a making a game that's actually fun to play.
