I've been replaying Kirby Air Ride to finish the Checklists on all 3 modes to pass the time for the playtest this weekend and I have grown a newfound appreciation for the Air Ride courses. I used to ignore them when I was younger but after doing some time attacks and free run laps I realized how well designed they were in terms of alternate routes and visuals, but you're right that the Air Ride machine side of balance was total whack. From what I looked up online most track world records are held by wheelie scooter for abusing a speed exploit by ramming into walls with a quick spin. Im certain that exploit is gone now with this newer engine.
The funny thing is that the Bulk Star apparently is so good now in the mew game that it got top time on Waterflow Waves in the 2nd direct, and from what I can tell all vehicles got a baseline QoL rebalancing (Swerve seems nerfed), so I dont think youll have to worry about Formula being shit on those older tracks, hopefully.
