I have more criticisms of the writing. The world building is bizarre, four episodes in and the entire subplot with Shroud is just not there, most of the secondary male characters are one-dimensional but at least they have variety unlike the secondary women of the Z-team who are all just sassy sarcastic badasses, I think the romance angles are pretty thin.

The animation, art style, and music are great. But the good writing crops up just enough for me to get reinvested only to stomach through some wince inducing dialog.

I just understand why the male Z-team members at least have variety with their personalities, even if they're thin, but all of the women seem the same. If you switched around the characters and the designs, would anything seem out of place regarding their personalities? I get that their ex-villains, but you'd think that would have informed the creative process a bit more. If they're apart of a superhero team they joined willingly (or not), you'd think that would be a great way to have more insight into the characters, but we get barely anything. This isn't even an issue regarding sex because the men (though they are also one-dimensional) are at least noticeably different in their personalities.

We've had FAR less time with characters in the first two episodes with games like Batman: TellTale, The Wolf Among Us, Tales from the Borderlands, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Walking Dead and yet those characters have more dimension than anything in in this game. It's not even a matter of it being in the comedy genre either as the opening cutscene and level of Grim Fandango has much more interesting characters.

I thought it would be more like The Boys as well but honestly it's way less satirical and meanspirited, in a world where superpowers exist it tries to keep it somewhat grounded like My Hero Academia, where they are just a replacement for firefighters and police with all the boring paper work and regulations it comes with.

The main character not having any superpowers and just inheriting a mecha suit and identity from his father and grandfather comes across like the story is someone on the writing team's personal struggle with their family business and losing their father.

There's an achievement called "aced your performance review" so at minimum you'll get praised or chewed out at the end. More than likely we'll get some brief note in the end about how fucking up so bad or succeeding so well leads to the Phoenix program getting dismantled/used in other branches, and how the Z-Team members themselves get fucked over/ turn themselves around because of it.

It's fun, and metagaming it by pumping low-downtime invisigal or early shift feeding flambae wins feels really good
but I wish it was connected to the story a bit more, even with just a few line changes or something. It's pretty gay to send a level 12 invisigal to solo defeat a company of professional assasins or single-handedly save vanderstank or defeat a kaiju then the next scene she's stressed out at the bottom of the leaderboard smoking in a playground about how she's a massive fuckup who can't do anything right
