RSIs are repetitive strain injuries. Injuries caused by things like mouse, keyboard and controller movements or if not gaming playing tennis, golf or using vibrating machinery. Capal tunnel is in that category and probably the most well known one but actually not that common with gaming. There's a host of other RSI injuries.
Playing through the pain is like the number one way to end up with one. They can take months and years to heal. I obviously have no idea what condition your wrists are so maybe everything is all good but maybe consider looking into it a little bit.
You are right though exercise is like the number one way to prevent them. Though if they get bad enough you might not be able to.
