Dialogue and dont you dare skin any of it or ill call you dsp. Dont you skip the opening pre title screen scene. You will let the konami logo fade away and get the foxhound lore. You better also watch the mission briefing logs found in the main menu before you start the game.

Kojimbo slop (admit that Konami did nothing wrong before anyone replies to me).

Decent, somewhat arcadey stealth gameplay that gets overshadowed by the sheer amount of cutscenes and codec conversations. Mind you, the voice acting is really really good, especially for the 90s. And the story is alright I guess, if a little bit retarded. But it's a fun ride.

I like VR Missions better because I really enjoy the stealth gameplay over the story.

I like that you posted the back of the CD case for OP since he likely doesn't know and won't know until it's time.

Unadulterated kino, and one of the best games in the franchise to this day.

Stuff to keep in mind:

1. MGS1 is technically the third Metal Gear game. It's a direct sequel to the 2D Metal Gear 1 and 2 games, originally released on the MSX home computers in Japan. The MGS1 has okay text summaries of both games' plots in the main menu (Previous operations, or something).

2. The game jumps into campaign pretty fast, with only a short (by today's standards) intro video playing right when you launch the game. If you want some more backstory and handy trivia, check the "Briefing Files" videos, again found in the Main Menu.

3. MGS is a pretty oldschool game with unique controls and mechanics. If you've never played a pre-2005 video game before, I highly recommend reading the game's MANUAL, and trying some of the tutorial missions ("VR Training"). Don't be ashamed to start on Easy mode.

Everything else is either pretty straight-forward, or you can spam your CODEC to ask for hints and trivia from your radio backup team.

I wish this was true because then I'd be asking why you didn't play it when it first released in 1998.

When I first played this around 2012 I thought he meant a music cd case. If he said "game case" I would've understood.

>I'd be asking why you didn't play it when it first released in 1998.
NTA, but do you have ANY idea how many completely different sorts of 10/10 masterpieces released on various systems in the year 1998 alone??

It might sound like lunacy to zoomers, but just some ~20 years ago, every gaming console and PC had their own "vibe" and target audience, their own genres and franchises they excelled at.

Hell, the past 15 years or so, I've been going back to play some countless evergreen classics I did miss in the 1990s. System Shock 2, Banjo-Kazooie, Parasite Eve, Chrono Trigger ... all games I played for the very 1st time in the mid-2010s.

Metal Gear Solid is up there with one of my favorite PS1 games, but I could never get on with the other games. I did beat MGS2, but I never liked it as much as the first. I tried to get into MGS3, but I just never found the motivation to get out of the first area in the jungle. It kinda feels like I'm too late to play that game since I've already been spoiled on it since first trying it.

NP broski! Have a good one.

>the controls probably won’t be too hard
They never were. MGS is essentially a top-down "shooter", where the point is to avoid detection instead of neutralizing the enemies.
But this alone seems to be such a foreign concept to the PS5 generation, that they must be tutored to change their head space and approach the game in a completely different manner.

The entire PS4's lifecycle wasn't able to pump out a single PSX year of good games. What is the legacy? A mediocre not-Assassin's Creed Japan, Hermen Hulst's meme spending, quite possibly the worst disaster in video game industry, a Call of Duty/FIFA no games successor. It's really sad to see Sony in this state. I used to be hyped for the next console generation. Now I play solely on PC and I've skipped PS5 altogether.

I tried playing the PC port back in 2013 and didn’t really enjoy it. I was always more a fan of the classic Blizzard games growing up like Warcraft 2, Diablo, and StarCraft, so “good” voice acting didn’t do anything for me in MGS1. The gameplay was serviceable but the constant codec calls and boss fights were unbearably tedious. At least I finally understood Metal Gear Awesome.
