>Bro... they're stuck in a loop until the problem is solved, that's fucking deep bro...
Name another sequel that unnecessarily ruined an interesting premise by overexplaining it.

The story plays a big part into what direction the gameplay goes into.

2 > 1
You guys just miss retarded grinding and annoying levels of RNG

I do miss the roster and base management. They should have added onto that. but slay the spire affected the indie market.

>try Darkest Dungeon for the first time
>it plays like a facebook game from over a decade ago
>given almost zero story to sink your teeth into
>bloated with DLC that has no regard for beginning players
>but it's fun because of LE DIFFICULTY
I got bored in two hours and never played it again. Guess I'll go back to Slay the Spire and The Binding of Isaac.

>Roster management
Kingdoms. Far more soulful than the recruitmentslop + asylumslop in the first one.

how does kingdom compare to the original game

as someone that has never, ever, played the sequel, redpill me on how to activate the kingdoms meme so I don't just refund the game right away

It doesn't have the same kind of base management, it's more of a board game type of thing, but in terms of roster management, it feels like a far more well realized version than the first one. You start with 8 heroes and any loss is permanent, which makes the stakes just right. There's no annoying grinding but the heroes aren't as disposable as the main mode in 2, since you can't just restart. Or rather, you can, but it's very suboptimal.

Your last point ruins your entire post because TBOI really hammers it in. With added DLC's enemies, bosses, rooms and worthless items. Unless you enjoy wasting one hour on base DMG hoping for something that actually helps and isn't a shit drop.

There should be a big obvious PLAY KINGDOMS button in the main menu but I don't know what happens if you launch the game itself for the first time, maybe it automatically starts you in a normal run or something

TBOI keeps new players from getting overwhelmed by only unlocking DLC content with accumulated wins, with the exception of Repentance, which can be safely ignored by not entering that door in the boss room.
Also there is very little consequences to losing a run in TBOI, which makes it low stakes to take your time learning the game.

Kingdoms is available from the beginning. It's kind of like an RTS Skirmish match. You get access to all heroes who are scattered over the map at various nodes and you travel your primary team between nodes to transport items, break sieges, collect treasure, or even swap out a new team while your current guys are too burdened with stress and fatigue to be useful. You can even hire soldiers who can protect inns while your main team is away. There are multiple difficulties you can select and even a custom difficulty mode where you can change how many heroes can die before you lose, how many inns you have to protect, how frequent setpiece battles are.

It feels good. It feels really good. HOWEVER, I would be lying if I said I didn't miss the memory shrines that reveal the heroes backstory, or the specific boss battles from the campaign. I wish there was a third path that had fully merged the "Confessions" campaign with the "Kingdoms" mode, like you still manage a map of inns that you upgrade and protect, but also let you progress the Confessions story and fight increasingly strong cultist enemies.

Repentance takes hold regardless of entering the door. Like it or not, most new players will play it with the DLC, and that includes the unnecessary nerfs that force you to slowly chew the giant steak.

If you're only interested in the combat, then yes, it's alright. if the art design, atmosphere, party comps, and resource management is what you enjoyed, then I wouldn't bother with 2

I will admit that the late game is damn awful in 1, and a big reason for why I never finished that game.

The art design in 2 is great. What are you talking about? The little knife twirl the Occultist does gets me hard every time.

man im so bummed dd2 was a roguelike, roguelikes are so fucking gay.
DD1 basically was lovecraft XCOM, a far better and time-tested formula than "le slay le spire le slayspire"
good thing that everyone universally agrees because dd2 flopped fucking hard, so hard it killed the voice actor

it also breaks immersion. Not only am I not invested into anything that's happening, I'm basically just chasing meta shekels to unlock more shit
