Looking back I can see a little bit of where the Don Mattrick Xbox team were coming from with the TV multimedia stuff. The 360 had some good exclusives from 2005-2008 sure, but what kept people interested was playing online with their friends, chatting in XBL parties, using it as an all purpose netflix box, maybe even a music player.
The real problem with that though is that they tried marketing an entire console from those features, those features were important for consoles to have but not important enough to justify buying one when the system itself is a crappy console with nogaemz.
I think Sony realized this earlier on in the gen, which is why they were able to course correct with the PS4, while Xbox stayed stuck in the "let's do everything but make a good gaming console" mentality.
And I think another reason why Xbox failed so hard after this gen was because they looked too much at following Nintendo than Sony. Nintendo have great first party games, that was what sold the Wii. The Kinect was never going to be as good as the Wii because Xbox couldn't develop and market great first party Kinect games. They missed the forest for the trees, they should've focused on competing with Sony rather than Nintendo.
That's really all I have to say about the 360. Some good ideas but out of touch executives ended up not understanding why their own product was so successful, so the latter half of its life was unfortunately rather mediocre.
