Best is the original Ryu Ga Gotoku Ishin.

Ghost of Yotei is also pretty fun.

Is the remake worse somehow? I'd normally go with the original game in any case but it runs pretty poorly on RPCS3 for me

Pretty much in every way, yes. Combat changes for the worse, completely unbalanced due to them futzing with what they did have and you get even more broken than you ever were in the original, the Seal system is significantly grindier and worse than the Seal system, the character changes cause issues especially if you played the older games let alone how many of them do not fit the time period at all, the visuals are so much worse, the rework of the elements breaks combat due to any element now stunlocking enemies, etc. The new content even made it grindier than the original and gatekeeps you from certain content for longer.

Ishin Kiwami is objectively worse in every way to the original it's honestly astounding. I have an entire writeup if you're actually more interested but it's truly an awful remake/remaster mess.

I'll have a look at that later on, I'm impressed by the dedication. I'll stick to the original, but I might have to import a hard copy for my PS3 in that case. I was thinking of using it as JP immersion anyway, so the only downside is spending some money instead of being able to pirate it.

The PS3 version has a translation patch so if you have a hacked PS3 you can just do that. PS4 doesn't have one yet, the guy is working on Kenzan right now.

The Shokuho mod for Bannerlord was pretty good. Needed to fix some of the weapon configs and the Blackpower and Yari expansion though.
