BG1 companions are pretty close to mercs anyway. They generally all have one small quest, but nothing like later games. It's pretty usual to swap them out as needed.
BG2 companions are fully fleshed out in comparison, including the returning ones

I say its worth for its coziness and its atmosphere (atleast the beginning I really much liked) but then it becomes like a mindless hack&slash at the mid/endgame, not a big fan of that but still worth a try.
