I played about 15 hours of what is supposed to be a Final Fantasy game. Does it get any better or is this it?
So far it has been:
-Walk from A to B through a linear corridor
-Dodge, counter attack
-QTE to kill the boss and flashy particle overload cutscene
-repeat

It gets worse. The story which was the best thing saving this garbage will go downhill after some point

That's the entire game. It never gets better. If anything the story and character fall off on the second half but gameplay and everything else will remain just as bad as it was in the first half.

FF16 is a game created specifically for people who don't play video games. It's not a game for fans or gamers, it's a game for like your sister or cousin that have never played a video game before in their lives but do kind of like Game of Thrones.

It couldn't decide whether it wanted to be an action game or an rpg (and it didn't even decide on making it an arpg, gave it action game combat instead).

The whole point of the Hideaway is being able to survive without magic. The blacksmith sidequest shows some shit that Cid had prepared for when magic goes away

It doesn't get better, and the ending totally sucks ass.

It is the worst Final Fantasy game, even worse than Final Fantasy XV. The best part is, its not even a proper Final Fantasy game.
It is an exposition-heavy game with 90% dialogue and cutscenes, featuring tiny gameplay segments and QTE boss fights.
The soundtrack is modern JRPG slop.

XIII has beautiful visual design, great soundtrack, a pretty cool (if underutilised) setting, and you do remember the characters whether you liked them or not. Meanwhile, in XVI you have the boring Mary Sue MC who can do no wrong, his crying onahole, tough guy who dies early and a bunch of bland interchangeable NPCs straight from a MMO. The only characters with an actual story and personality there are Dion and maybe Joshua.

this is so true. my dad got a ps5 last year and this was the game I picked out for him and he loved it. he hadn’t touched a controller since playing Mario 64 back in the 90s and he was able to figure out most of it. I'm also just a few hours in and noticed that the side quests are the most pathetic fetch quests ever. Do I just skip them and power through the story or is there some use for them?

Its pretty ass, but the Eidolon fights are great. The most telling things is how the devs got bitchy when people said they took the RPG out of the game, which is absolutely true. Gear is always just an upgrade, and the relics or whatever just buff individual skills so you just pick the ones you are using. For me the combat boiled down to using the garuda skill with stun break until you knock whatever your killing down, then using two other set up abilities that deal damage when you deal damage (I think ramuh and Bahamut?) and blow your Bahamut beam load. You can 1 or 2 cycle most things.

The thing is that they didn't fully take out the RPG, and if they wanted to go the action game route, they really needed to. They're desparation to pretend they were still making an RPG hindered the game. Trash mobs where you can't fully utilize the combat, fetch quests, pointless upgrades for "items", all the padding.
The best parts were the "action game focused" parts where you're going through a corridor area to get to the big boss fights in action-packed sequences.

If they didn't want to dedicate themselves to an action game, they should've dropped it and gone full ARPG or just RPG.
