FF8
What were GFs and Junctioning supposed to be anyways? At first it seems like they're just spirits that you sort of absorb and junctioning is just another word for possession, since Selfie in the orphanage flashback says she junctioned with a monster that she accidentally killed as a child in the forest. But then you fight Adel and she actually Junctions with Rinoa and they appear as Rinoa fused onto Adel's body and then in the Ultimecia fight, she Junctions Griever and the two become a fusion of the two beings.

Ifrit was a real and physical as Squall, as were the other ones you'd fight. I guess its just some sort of weird bounding ritual you can perform on things that submit to you. As for GFs, I guess they are just monsters with human like intelligence that don't mid helping ones they like.

I'm assuming that ALL humans in the FF8 world have some level of magical properties, and not just Sorceresses. So I guess the small magical part of humans can interact with the monsters in the world and that causes junctioning. Sorceresses are just the ones with stolen/borrowed god powers passing them down as they die.

It’s some kind of technology, Dr Odine invented it to mimic the “real” magic that sorceresses use

Junction just comes from the Latin word for "joining" (iunctio), and I wouldn't look further than that.

Speaking of Latin, I remember never being able to solve the painting puzzle as a kid in the original and then when I played the Remaster, still never being able to complete it before finally looking up the solution. I knew it had something to do with the clock but because I couldn't see the second hand because of how blurry the textures were, I was getting confused why I needed 3 words when there were what I assumed to be only 2 hands
