Scrapnik Island was basically the only good thing to come from the IDW comics, so I'm at least optimistic about it. Not really that big into comics but I will probably check it out just to see if it's good when it comes.

I think Evan's always falling just short of a good story and I don't know how much of that is personal failing and how much is trying to play nice with Ian.

I think Ian's been completely awful on the book with a handful of exceptions. He's done better on the last two video games and his personal comics, so I don't know if he's just stopped giving a shit or he's floundering.

Danny's written two stories so far: one was really good, and the other was just kinda ok. I think he'd have a better batting average if he took over the book, but I don't know if he could knock out a good story consistently.

A lot of the one-time contributors did a great job. Dunno if they could handle monthly schedules.

TL;DR, it got better after Eggperial City, but it's still real wobbly and had some insanely bad misses. They either need an editor with a firm vision or a new writer who has a different approach.

Yeah, that's how I felt after reading scrapnik island too, it really stands out with it's cool scenarios and amazing ending. Raised the bar for idw's sonic by quite a bit.
The phantom rider arc was pretty cool tho... I like Surge and Kit's deal too...

Bad. Lots of checklist style writing and repetition. Only good issue was Whisper's.

Really, really bad. Long, doesn't capitalize on strengths of the characters or franchise, repetitive, payoffs are almost all terrible, lots of stuff brought up just to be immediately dropped.

Very mixed. Part work really well and other parts are insanely stupid. Starline is great in theory but wasted too much screen time showing his flaws at length instead of writing fun stories showcasing them. Surge is great when she's a perpetual loser who still keeps screwing things up for people despite it, but they're all over the place with her motivations and plot beats. Kit's great in theory but they keep telling us he's a cunt instead of showing us.

The second Tangle and Whisper became a couple it destroyed both characters, dumbing them down into a yes man and a crybaby. Lanolin is great in concept but the book utterly failed to get it across and pussied out on her crash out at the last second. Jewel is completely incoherent.

Exist. Feels like they don't know what to do with them.

Conceptually irresponsible. Worst issue of the comic was Ian killing him because he didn't want to keep dealing with the issues introduced by having him around.

Almost the entirety of StC's good content can fit within IDW's page count. Archie had done more with its cast by issue 40, and it did a bad job at using them. We still barely have any fun stories with the game characters. Knuckles is barely even here. Amy and Tails and Rouge are all Yes Men to other characters. Silver and Blaze exist almost exclusively for fanservice. I have a better sense for Charmy's character than Silver's at this point, and Charmy is exclusively used as comic relief backup for Espio and Vector, who rarely show up.

Amy's very first appearance was stubbornly clinging to Sonic when he didn't want her around. Her second major appearance was doting on him but also dragging him around, demanding he stop fighting a robot, and going off on her own adventure. She didn't start becoming a passive, supporting character until Unleashed. Even Frontiers, for as bad as the writing is, had her argue with Sonic for a bit. The comics version doesn't really stand up for herself or argue with him at all.

Sally x Nicole was weird in the reboot because Nicole was effectively her sister. I don't mind Sally being down to fuck anything that moves, but they made it weird for no reason. She already had Bunnie and others as pals.

Tangle x Whisper similarly isn't bad because gay, but because it's a really bad followup to Whisper's initial arc (the first person you open up to being your romantic partner is usually the start of an abusive relationship and speaks poorly on the person who opened up) and because it destroyed any nuance to either of them. Tangle only acts in support of Whisper even when it's nonsense and Whisper is constantly breaking down so Tangle can support her despite that not fitting her backstory and making her look pathetic when it happens so often.

Orbot's rebrand is only bad because the joke quality plummeted and the nature of the ribbing was worse. Cubot's great in concept, but nobody uses him right.

Orbot shouldn't be hiding his disdain; he should still be blunt. That antagonism is what makes him work. Cubot should be the one trying to soothe the Dr's temper with more grovelling and kinder wording, but the joke is sometimes his stupider nature makes his comments even more vicious.

The is due to the reactive storytelling the writers fell into and not letting anything cook. Fans cry out demanding things be addressed right away or lose their shit whenever a character isn't being sensitive enough. I remember when twitter/ X got their collective panties in a bunch when Tangle wanted their team name to be the Diamond Cutters and they wasted half a chapter sorting their feelings out in the middle of what should have been a tense arc.

Yeah, a lot of the writing problems are fan appeasement and pandering. Evan's listened to feedback on structural problems and character voice issues, which is good and I think has helped the book, but both Ian and Evan listen to what fans say they like and hate, and especially to things they think are "nasty," which they absolutely shouldn't until *after* a story is over.

Making Orbot blunt and Cubot sensitive would make for a good empathy hierarchy. You would always feel bad for poor Cubot, getting bullied by Orbot and punished by Eggman, and the audience gets to root for him to get little personal wins when Eggman's defeated. Orbot gets to keep roasting Eggman, but the audience gets catharsis when he's punished because he bullies Cubot.

My only issue is that IDW Comics don't seem to add any male OCs as one of main characters. Every male OCs is either a npc or a one-off villain. The only one that's close to this is Kit but he's secretly a psycho.

As with a lot of the IDW OCs, this wouldn't be a problem if they could just pick a fucking lane with Whisper. Having a romantic partner is fine if she's jaded but ultimately composed and functional (making her the straightman to Tangle's monke), her having severe unchecked PTSD that makes her cry/break down constantly makes Tangle come off as either manipulative or stupid for rushing into things.
Then again, Tangle molested Belle in their first meeting, so who knows, maybe they're setting up an arc about Tangle being a secret genius sex pest.

Every licensed work has rules set by the parent company. The only rule that’s really outrageous is the “no money” one. From Archie, which was completely different from the games. It was always stupid to use that as a gauge for Ian's writing for something more game universe oriented.

Anyway, the fact that Ian and Evan first got instant praise while Barnes has this underline of hesitation means he's probably more fit since it will be the opposite of what happened to the aforementioned two.

All shit compared to the fleetway comics. I'm sorry but robotic just coming out of existence from nothing versus an actual story between him and Sonic is garbage. The fleetway lore gave them a reason not to kill each other beyond some shitty "he can change" batman shit. It also explains why Sonic has his power to begin with instead of just inexplicably being a blue hedgehog. I still find it comical that they gave Shadow his very own section in a literal game about time travel and Mephiles was just a level boss in the thing. No scheming (and inevitable betrayal) with Black Doom, no greater importance due to his nature as a time traveler, just some guy the Shadow runs into and kicks the shit out of.
Biggest missed opportunity of the game, honestly. Mephiles was one of the few parts of 06 that was worthwhile and I wouldn't hate him being back in the timeline with a one-sided blood feud against Shadow. There's never enough schemer villains.

Really? Sure, he tried to use some ancient evil robot to try and kill Sonic but that's it. His role in Emerl's death is only partial (his old programming was the main contributor) and building G-merl ain't that high on the list either.
Surely breaking Earth into fucking chunks or enslaving an entire other planet (both with the intent to build theme parks) would be worse overall.
