You forgot that before this roll, you first have to roll a standard die for every Miku, Eggman and Knuckles in the match. On 1-3, they go on the rails and will always knock you away to hell. On 4-6, they did not go on the rails so it's safe and you can roll the perfect landing. I can do it semi-reliably, but if anything touches me before or during the rails I'm guaranteed to die. There are two main differences. First is that defensive options are terrible so you are almost always vulnerable. You can't intercept attacks during curves and racers are often tight enough that you won't have time to use shield type items on reaction even when expecting it. The other issue is that rings really matter for speed and 99 only gets you to 50% of the possible speed boost. Getting hit on the last lap isn't just bad because of reducing your position, but also because it cuts down your speed. These are both without even considering that the game gives options to help baggers that will make sure the last half of lap three is absolute chaos every single race.

This is my first Sonic game in years, I have a question. Are the characters supposed to be "old" now?
