The death of more mainstream gore stuff is the consolidation of media. High risk one offs arent gone for as often anymore. Its why you don't get as many a list actors doing a silly comedy movie as often.

The argument that "Edge was all marketing back then" was already lampooned, and except for a handful of characters who made it so long they were sort of fond remembrances (ie Sonic being from the Animals-With-Attitude era) most were treated as the shitty POOCHIE THE ROCKIN DOG XTREME cash ins they were. Same with edge for the sake of it. However, there was a lot of "genuine" extreme/edgy media back in the 90s and 2000s and it was there for a reason.

Much of it had to do with the resurgence of the religious right, the Jerry Falwell types and the like pushing their way into the culture, the past Santanic Panic etc... mixed with the early ennui of what at the time was a stable-ish if boring time of the End of History. This is why we got Fight Club from the same era. We were sold an idea that basically the USSR fell and therefore the Murrikkkan Capitalism (tm) is the only successful way to go, forever into the future, and with all the cracks beginning to show after the decades of deregulation (but before shit totally went off the cliff with 9/11 and the Great Recession) there was a lot of ennui or frustration. This could be its own subject for a long fucking time but suffice it to say, that things have changed today.

I remember talking about how there were numerous anime series at the time(and a few games) where the protagonists wore something veryt similar to a SS uniform. One I remember is the pretty awesome
