I Miss Handheld Gaming
Not the stupid giant tablets like the switch and steam deck, real handhelds like the gameboy, psp and ds

The unique limitations and quirks of pocketable handhelds create experiences which can't be replicated in the current gaming landscape

They shouldn't be replicated. Go play a 2600 if you want to have your experience be limited. I'm glad that they're dead.

Like 80% of current Japanese developers would be better off making handheld games. Their budgets don’t seem to have scaled to these modern times, and they’d be more focused mechanically and better looking visually if they were still on portable machines, I think. The HD transition has not been like to Japan.

True. The nintendo switch has been a disaster for japanese game development.

It's same as mobile shit

They are indeed making switch 1 and 2 games.

Get a Switch Lite or a chinkheld like a Retroid Pocket 5.

I'll buy the switch lite when they make one with a better screen. For now I'm coping with the oled switch.

GBA, DS, and 3DS have some pretty amazing libraries. I never got into the switch, personally. I always thought it was a bit fucked up because devs had to make the game for both TV play as well as handheld play, so I figured the games just sucked cock

Which games specifically created a unique experience that couldn't otherwise be replicated? Because when i played gameboy, they were just tiny nintendo games. MegaMan, Mario, etc.

Hand held gaming was the beginning of this slop yoi see now. You aren't suppose to take your bideo gaems everywhere and play it anytime. Now we are stuck in the endless cycle of constant entertainment
Anonymous No.724989872 [Report] >>724989936
Would there be any audience if someone just a modern GB or DS equivalent, with decent enough specs and its own games? $250.
Not talking about a retro device that runs android or something, but just a cheap handheld with cheap original games and ports of smaller AA and indie games.

There are gamepad accessories for phones, but I've never tried them. Just get good with touch screens. All the kids did.

what multi-screen games existed where the second screen was not just a glorified minimap and/or inventory?

the switch also has a touch screen that works with a capacitor pen

are there DS games that use the dual screen for anything interesting? Maps. inventory, etc. are somewhat helpful but I daresay not a very compelling feature for the extra screen.
Anonymous No.724990408 [Report]
literally just slap a fucking controller on your phone and emulate
soon you'll be able to play steam games on your phone via proton
pocketable handhelds are a shit form factor that's been made redundant by phones, they're a waste of silicon for how thermally limited they are

you're getting proton on android
that form factor is too small for cooling and no one is wasting silicon to fight with phones

>Bottom sticks
Why do retards keep doing this stupid shit? These things are always so poorly designed that your thumbs/palms end up hitting the sticks when you're working the buttons and Dpad
Anonymous No.724991736 [Report] >>724991818
>>724991672
So you want them to be Wii U layout?
Anonymous No.724991818 [Report] >>724992250
>>724991736
Yes. Top sticks and triggers for 3D games. Dpad and Buttons on the bottom for 2D games. It's that simple but they don't do it because people think "PlayStation layout" is good and not just forced on people because don't refuse to pay for a new PS1 controller design with the dual shock.
Anonymous No.724992034 [Report]
>>724991672
Most of these systems have specs targeting d-pad centric emulation. The Retroid Pocket 6 has the option to get top stick or bottom stick to make this no longer a complaint.
Anonymous No.724992250 [Report]
>>724991818
I actually agree but it's just so vastly unpopular compared to Xbox and PS layouts. The Flip 2 is actually laid out like this but it's still not perfectly ergonomic due to the lack of grips.

I can't really play turn based RPGs unless I'm playing them handheld. Too many nights as a lonely child with a GBA. Marche did nothing wrong.

>just get off with touch screens
oh fuck right off, it's absolute ASS to play games like Metroid on GBA that require directions, A/B, and shoulder buttons at the same time
A modern non-redwizard-chinkshit phone with slide out controls would be kino, but for now a stretchy bluetooth controller is the best we've got. I got one and being able to play literally every Tony Hawk game on one device is pretty sick
Some of the dedicated emulation handhelds look neat but I've never seen the benefit over phone+controller or even a hacked Switch
