Resident Evil is better as an actiom game
Whenever RE does survival horror, it is a good survival horror game. But when it does action it is always one of the best games of the generation.

Nailed it. I love both forms of RE, but they're even better when they dial up the action, they know what they're doing with both but they have a leaning for sure.

Of course, both styles generate enjoyable games after all. But i argue that the survival horror are a bit behind, as they can't really go all out since keeping this style of gameplay requires deliberate limitations.

Wrong and retarded. REmake and 2 are among the best survival horror games full stop. Meanwhile 5 was mediocre as an action game and as a RE game, and the most memorable thing about 6 was the logo looking like a dude blowing a giraffe. Also stop replying to yourself, it's sad

Regardless, Remakes 1 and 2 are excelent, some of the best games of all time, but they are quite similar to other games like Dead Space and newer games like Tormented Souls. This is not an insult, it's just that theres only so much you can do while keeping the tension required of a survival horror.
It's a shame you dislike 5. It's one of the best action games of all time and the best selling resident evil, although the numbers have become confused due to re releases and physical sales. In any case, the action games have more freedom to go wild with the gameplay and as a result it's harder to say theyre interchangeable with other games, so to speak, as they are pretty unique in a good way. Even 6 which has been getting meme'd on on /v/ these past years is a great action game with some of the best combat in the industry, which sadly has never been replicated.
Also anon, saying the most memorable thing about 6 is the giraffe just reveals you didnt play it. It's so full of stupid moments it's outrageous.

It was too expensive to make, it banked on making COD level money, which was explosively popular at the time. It sold well, but not well enough. It has long broken even and it's sales are nearly om the level of RE 5 nowadays however.

There's a reason that we got 2 action games from RE4's development (DMC & RE4). It's that "survival horror" games simply arent fun and Kamiya/Mijami were acutely aware of that while making their respective RE4's.

The Evil Within 2 is better than any "tradtional" non-RE4/5 type RE. REmake & RE2 are boring and unfun.

I just finished my first playthrough of RE5 in Veteran and now that I'm finally done with it, I feel like I now have a complicated relationship with the game.
>Playing it on Veteran as my very first time playing the game felt like a huge mistake on a lot of occasions, but it also gave me a pretty good challenge
>Hated the inventory system, but I understand that it was necessary not to pause the game since it's supposed to be a co-op game
>A truckload of enemies on almost every area and many of them were huge damage sponges, this was even worse when the game threw several Lickers at me. I'm so glad the game only had four chainsaw encounters because holy shit they took forever to kill if I didn't want to waste ammo
>Boss fights sucked ass, period
>Pretty much stuck with early-game weapons because everything else came too late. On the other hand, I love me some max crit Handgun for instant headshot kills

Honestly, I'm not looking forward to playing 6 because I really am not a fan of having an AI partner just getting in the way, and I'm definitely playing that one in Normal.

This RE6 sold more copies than RE7 but RE7 cost way less money to make and when you adjust cost to profits they probably were close to even. Since a low cost to make is a safer bet to risk averse businesses 7 won out in the end.
>>724997796
Survival horror was seen as fad because of the under performance of REmake,0,outbreak1/2,CVX and Dead Aim. Whether or not each of those game under performed solely because horror wasn't that popular is debatable but it wasn't as popular as shooters. Action was big and always has been but if everyone is making action shooters, it's hard to stand out with an action shooter.

Few RE5 mechanics translate to 6 and the partner is immortal there, so don't worry.
You did a pretty awkward thing picking veteran first, the game is built with the upgrade system in mind and enemies are more aggressive on veteran so you got a pretty rude awakening.

>Hated the inventory system, but I understand that it was necessary not to pause the game since it's supposed to be a co-op game
It's annoying at first, but it suits the gameplay pretty well once you learn how to properly use it. Keep weapons and grenades on the quickslot squares, ammo next to guns so you can instant reload and dont be greedy. Those nine squares fit two weapons, two packs of ammo, two types of grenades, two heals and a vest. It's more than enough for the whole game.
>A truckload of enemies on almost every area and many of them were huge damage sponges
The damage is mostly due to you starting on veteran. Regardless, you can run past most fights in the game. The lickers indeed are a huge pain, the best idea is saving the grenade launcher just for them. The only chainsaw majini you need to kill is the first, the others are optional.
>Boss fights sucked ass, period
True, they are pretty lackluster. Did you enjoy the Wesker boss though?
>Pretty much stuck with early-game weapons because everything else came too late.
All weapons are usable so it doesnt matter much. The game expects you to try other weapons on different playthroughs.

A tip if you ever replay it. Give the AI partner different weapon types than yours so you dont share ammo. I reccomend an smg and a sniper, as the ai never misses and doesnt go for headshots. Also change it's behavior on the fly depending on the situation. The ai on attack mode is a beast, if you can babysit it well enough.

Sheva's onboard AI is dogshit for anything that isn't a bolty. Giving her any automatic makes her larp like Rambo. And tossing her a shotty causes the silly bitch to get right up in their grill before kneecapping them. On the plus side she can be helpful with heals and eggs. >You did a pretty awkward thing picking veteran first
I was expecting a similar experience to 4 and I had played Dead Space and F.E.A.R. on Hard prior to starting RE5, so I just wanted to keep with the trend of making horror games more challenging, but I really wasn't expecting such a huge amount of enemies per encounter and so many damage sponges early on.

>Did you enjoy the Wesker boss though?
The first fight was annoying because Sheva would take forever to get an RPG charge, then it boiled down to running around so I could finally shoot a rocket at Wesker to damage him. The final fight was more fun but still too easy, just run behind him while he focuses on Sheva, shoot the big glowing pimple, then unload rifle shots to his chest, rinse and repeat.

>Give the AI partner different weapon types than yours so you dont share ammo. I reccomend an smg and a sniper
That's exactly what I did, I took her pistol away and gave her the TMP and the Rifle while I kept the Handgun, the Shotgun and whatever other gun that fit the moment, like the Magnum or the Grenade Launcher.

>>725000439
She was good at spreading bullets with the TMP, but it was a matter of me following up with melee so she wouldn't waste them all on body shots. She actually wasted all of her ammo on the part where she gets caged on the ship and died to the dogs while I was trying to rescue her.

Giving Sheva herbs is the worst choice possible, as she will use them way before youre damaged enough to need their full heal. She is genuinely great with smgs, she never misses after all, so no bullet goes wasted.

Never had that problem, probably because i always grab the rocket ammo myself. There are more ways to damage Wesker, though the game refuses to tell you.

Funny thing about that part: you can skip it if you have the sniper at the beggining of the level. It's has been years since i last saw that cage.

I decided to have Sheva collect the RPG ammo because on the sole instance that I did while she held the RPG, she immediately shot at Wesker and missed. I was also shooting his missiles while Sheva was doing errands, so once I learned the fight it was a smooth ride.

We got it because the game was in development hell and they couldn't come up with an enjoyable gameplay loop. Mikami (post Kamiya spazzing out into DMC like a singularity) kept trashing the builds because they just weren't fun. Finally he came up with the shoot/melee loop and went from there. The story was then tacked on after. RE1 due to limitations having originally started as a FPS set in a haunted house.

>>724999436
I wasn't actually speaking on the popularity though. I remember playing RE2 on my dreamcast and being bored + confused as to why people were talking about these games. Even as a big George Romero fan at the time, they underwhelmed me. Would much rather have been playing House of the dead or a Doom Wad, and was overall just disappointed with the series until RE4. Recently played through 5 and 6 with a friend for the first time. They’re tons of fun on coop, but I gotta say, 6’s mercenaries mode has to be the peak of the franchise.

While completing the campaigns, I was already enjoying the more action-based moves that 6 had compared to 5, but when we tried out the Mercenaries mode, holy cow it was a whole another world.

I feel like 6 doesn’t do a good job of showing how flexible the melee combat system is, but by god after spending hours looking up guides on how to do the stuff like coup de gras and counter moves, along with actually trying them out in the field, it was so worth it. It’s so fun to chain together moves into takedowns.

It’s just a shame that all this studying up came after we beat all the main campaigns(because the campaigns never told us how to do these things). Still, it’s undoubtably my favorite of the combat systems. a dream remake of mine would probably be 5 in the combat style of 6. I would just hope they keep the inventory of 5, because I really didn’t like the inflexibility of 6’s gun/inventory system compared to 5

Fixed that for you, sellout bitch. You don't like Resident Evil, and that's why you like it when it abandons its own design. You want something made for someone else to be made for you and not for them, and you share your taste with the lowest common denominator because you are a mid creature.
