It had only been a year. In Valve time, this is unacceptable. We were expecting updates for L4D and there really was no reason for a sequel so soon.

I still prefer the first. 2 is good though

Valve made games in 2009. That's why the short time was a questionable.
Even now, making a sequel a year after the first game is a bit weird. Don't know why Valve did it.

Port to Source 2, I mean.
L4D2 was basically done minus Lost Stream and basically the only thing that remained is the segment they stuck in SteamVR Home for the Peanut Gallery.
Which itself is also kind of a shame since the SDK for Steam Home is Windows only, and it's VR only so the map scene for it kind of fucking sucks.

This is a common misconception.
There's a scene test for the planation house with updated materials and model, but it's unrelated to the L4D2 source 2 project which mostly just exists as a straight port of L4D2 to Source 2 with no real "improvements" that aren't simply inherited from the engine.
A similar scene test exists for a counterstrike map, but I'm less familar with it.

I mean to be fair, Left 4 Dead 2 was a glorified expansion at best.

The even crazier part is the first game was ported wholesale into Left 4 Dead 2, kinda proving everybody's point in a backwards sort of way.

Like, if say Steam Home wasn't just VR only, for example, and the SDK wasn't only for windows users only.
You can fit a whole ass game in the V-Script.
Respawning players, tracking score, "win" conditions on a map.
But because it's windows only basically the only shit that exists is fucking ports of other maps (because this is a LOT easier in source 2) and shit like Jailbreak and I think there's a version of TTT for CS:2, but I could be wrong.
Because it's uncomplicated.

I remember that "boycott." You ever see that image of the steam "boycott MW2!" group where everyone was playing MW2? same shit here pretty much.

I do understand it though, Valve just was *not* in the "yearly rehashed sequel" industry by any metric so it felt off for them to put out 2 so quickly. ultimately it's a much better game than 1 and within a year or so it even had basically everything from 1 anyway, so it's a wash.

They sort of fucked it with Portal 2 and L4D2. Because both of those games ends without a clear continuation. L4D1 ended with it hinted that the Green Flu had not spread to the East Coast. Now the East Coast is infected where in the US do you go next? Fucking Utah with Mormon zombies? That's why L4D3 was going (until it got scrapped) to be set in North Africa. Portal 3 will not have Chell in it, and presumably will have to be drawn from the ground up.

>It had only been a year. In Valve time, this is unacceptable.
This is basically why Valve refuses to just release a Half-Life 3. Valve could easily release a new game with the same quality as Half-Life 2 but that's not good enough for Gay Ben. Half-Life 3 has to be an industry changing masterpiece or Valve would rather release nothing at all.

If you go back and look at Half-Life 2 you'll see they aren't content with just making a game where Gordon Freeman goes around shooting things. Practically every new chapter involves some gimmick whether it's the new physics engine or the gravity gun or driving a car or controlling antlions. The same was true for Portal 2 which is constantly introducing new things to the player.

The problem with this is that Valve seems to have run out of ideas to justify a new Half-Life 3 or new Portal 3. The only reason we got a Half-Life Alyx is because VR meant they had new tech to introduce new gimmicks to the players.
