Shenmue is basically an adventure/life simulator. Fights are rare, and only at the end of the game do you really have a long battle that requires some skill.
The game is impressive, its scope is greater than almost all modern games (even AAAs), and you can easily see that they poured a lot of money and talent into the product.
I think the game is good if you see it as an adventure with investigation/narrative, and occasional combat experience. Perhaps the only thing that is really kind of bad is the forklift races. The races are kind of fun, but they shouldn't be mandatory. After the first one, there should be an option to not participate in them.

Yeah it's alright. Just don't go in expecting some kind of in your face action game, has more in common with a point and click.

It's pretty comfy if you're into that kind of cozy slow exploration. If you like games like Echo Night, or you're one of those people that enjoy how slow you move and explore cupboard by cupboard in RDR2, then you'll like Shenmue.

mandatory forklift races every day are indeed kind of annoying and the only way to skip them was to just not play them and leave the race finish, i still got the 1st and 2nd place figurines tho

it's great, it's a smaller scale story but most of the progression comes through gameplay rather than cutscenes with a nice variety of systems. it's makes the journey very rewarding even though you're doing basic things at a snails pace. there's very little like it
