The world is interconnected like previous Prime games via portals. Best of both worlds, a huge open world, and you can curtail it if one would want.

Nintendo ruined Zelda by turning it into Ubislop, and they're doing the same thing to Metroid. Wonder what's next? Giving Mario crafting mechanics with six different materials, one of which can be bought with real money?

If you can curtail it then what's the point of having it in the first place. If there is stuff in it then people will be obligated to not curtail it anyways.

Portals are a horrible way to do it. See how much of a downgrade later Souls games are compared to pre-Lordvessel DS1 in terms of level design,

if there's fast travel, the open world aspect of the game sucks ass
this rule works in 100% of cases and is applicable to any and every open world game

It's akin to there being items to get in Phendrana Drifts, but you can just go to Phazon Mines instead. As if you're saying what's the point of Phendrana Drifts.

Warping all over the place is the thing that makes the world feel like a disjointed mess, so I seriously hope it's not portals.

Portals are perfect for this, because there's an open world too, this negates doing that old fast travel map shit games are guilty of and instead immerses you in the game world whole sale.

These portals will feel like elevators from previous games.

What are you talking about. Phendrana Drifts isn't optional

>correlation is causation
If portals ruined the game you'd have more fun running from anor longo to sens fortress, to firelink, to new londo, to the poison swamp, to firesage demon. but you teleport. I wonder why.

The metroidvania formula already is an open world. I'm trying to enjoy my tex mex and you plop a lasagna down on my plate because you think my meal needs some beef, cheese, and tomato like bro I already had all of that and then you go oh ok I'll add a smaller slice of lasagna and I'll mix it in with your quesadilla GET IT OUT OF HERE MAN IT'S ALREADY A COMPLETE MEAL

No they won't.
Elevators made sense within the physical space of the game world. You're going up or down so you get a sense where you're roughly located in the world.
Warping doesn't have that, even if technically they can be a similar thing that masks a load screen.

I am discussing the optional items, can you even into comparisons. Most likely you just interpret what people say in the most uncharitable ways.

The original Metroid on NES is open ended, but each subsequent game became much more confined. Prime 4 marks an innovative step forward for the franchise now.

>I am discussing the optional items
And using a non-equivalent example to do so. You NEED to go to Phendrana Drifts. If you NEED to go to the open world sections for items then you aren't "curtailing" the section. If you DON'T NEED to go to the open world section (ie it only has optional items) then using Phendara Drifts as an analogy doesn't work

Portals can work, off the top of my head a portal can have signs of where the exit point is. If a portal to a cold location is placed in a temperate location, you might see snow in the vicinity of the portal. Metroid Prime games already had a map system that displayed elevators with up and down arrows and you have to play a bit of where's waldo with them. Surely the portals will display on the map in a more easy of use way, such as being able to select one and have it pan to where the connective tissue is.

Stop being autistic. Asking what the point of a location in Prime 4 you can choose not to go; is like asking what the point of a location in Prime 1 you can choose not to go.

Weren't the beams of light being traversed using the Light Suit in Echoes basically just portals, as OP is describing them?

Except you can't choose to not go to Phendrana Drifts you retard. Phendrana Drifts isn't optional.

>completely missing the point
It's not that traversing the game sucks post Lordvessel because you can warp, the devs gave you the ability to warp as a bandaid because the world layout goes to shit and traversing it sucks. Earlier, non BotW-raped Metroid games did not need warping, because the map layout and flow of the game was actually well designed and well though-out, and the fact that you're able to warp in 4 is a red flag that the level design is going to suck.

Let me break it down one last time
>It's akin to there being items to get in Phendrana Drifts, but you can just go to Phazon Mines instead. As if you're saying what's the point of Phendrana Drifts
So instead of going into Phendrana Drifts for optional items I can go straight into Phazon Mines and because of this it seems I would state that Phendrana Drifts has no point? That is wrong, I wouldn't make that comparison/arguement because Phendrana isn't an optional area. The point of it at one time was that it was an area you HAD to go through.

How this relates to open world segments in 4 is that if at any time you need to/are required to go to the open-world sections then you no longer are curtailing the section in a meaningful way. It's just a complete level you have to finish before you are allowed to skip afterwards.

The portals are like elevators, and optional items are optional. It is what it is.
