Not only do items not stun you for a million years, but you can safely block many incoming attacks since you can hold items behind you, unlike CW where if someone throws something at you on a corner, you're fucked since you toss items behind yourself at a different angle than items come at you, many of MK8D's catch up items are actually rare, and 6 people won't have a bullet bill on the last corner, it also didn't bring back the Mega Mushroom after it had previously been removed between Wii and 7 as Nintendo at the time understood that it was too fucking strong, and yet CW has an invincible version of the Mega Mushroom, Green Shells also don't have lock-on attacks, and the only item in the game that makes you drop your items is the Lightning. CW's items are bullshit.

The goal of a kart racer should be to keep the race dynamic and tight, not to determine the outcome based on a dice roll to get the items that will prevent you from losing because you couldn't take the shortcut just before the finish and didn't have a shield to stop the barrage of projectiles and drills chasing after you. Mario Kart is bad enough, but this game makes a number of mistakes that makes item balance even worse like you point out. I still think it is fun, but I really hope they put some effort into balance.

Northstar Island Red Ring #3 is outright the worst thing in the entire Sonic franchise

- Behind an almost invisible shortcut
- Requires a hyper specific item to reach (no, boosts do NOT fucking work)
- Most of the roster can't even get the shortcut because they're too slow. Zavok outright can't jump that giant chasm
- On the third lap of the race, so you have to waste a ton of time if you fuck it up (you will)
- Retrying a race costs a massive chunk of currency so you're better off just restarting the GP entirely

It's now become a dark chao-like situation where, if I see that it's a frenzy world and don't see a bunch of boost rings everywhere I'll throw my items anticipating that I'll lose them anyways.
Feels a bit silly when it's just the drift.

You may be joking, but I really believe Speedstorm is an AMAZING kart racer, gameplay wise. Kudos to the devs, because the racing feels so fucking good that for me it was above CTR:NF and MK8 in terms of fun driving/drifting (also helps that I love old disney characters).
Sadly the P2W stuff largely overshadows what could be one of the best kart racers in the market. I abandoned ship months ago in the Tron season, so I don't know how worse it got, but it was REALLY bad trying to keep up with events as a f2p player. Come CrossWorlds and it already dethroned every other kart racer for me, they just need to balance this thing a bit and give voices to the DLC characters.

The game is an incredible base to expand upon, with so many ways to customize your drift and playstyle you could literally turn this into any kart game you'd like
It just needs some item finetuning and network fixing and it's perfect
