I've just been playing f2p since 2002.

At some point you should be able to just sell dupes to keep up your membership, but $100/year for a ridiculous amount of time spent ingame is a deal. Poors need not respond, if you cannot afford $100 annually for your entertainment then you should be job hunting!

You know why that is, right? It's because for years, Runescape lacked the dungeons and raids where other MMOs of the era traditionally flexed their game design and narrative elements a bit harder than the typical quest. Even now, OSRS is still far behind with their raid design and count, and still lacks dungeons. They had to make the quests more involved to compensate, but their lack of replayability and solo nature means that you were effectively paying and grinding to get access a very brief amount of single player RPG and puzzle content.

As such, it's the height of irony: the one area where Runescape is "better" than some other MMOs is also where it's exemplified how bad of a MMO that Runescape is.

The xp curve really is brutal considering some skills just have fuckall at their 99s.
In general there is too much shit that exists solely to discourage people from ever actually completing the game.
I'm not a bot, I'm not going to sit at ammonite crabs and prayer flick or whatever for hundreds of hours to get a +1.

$100 a year is like $8.30 a month. That is about $3 more a month than when RS was $5 a month. It really isn't that much of a price hike in fairness when you factor in inflation. There are things to complain about in regards to OSRS but membership price isn't one of them.

Playing the game long enough to actually hit the "midgame" (base 70s+, at least) disabuses you of the notion that getting 99s is "completing the game," or that maxing is even a realistically attainable goal for 99% of people. You can do almost everything the game has to offer with stats in the mid-80s (less than 25% of the way to 99).
Construction is one of the most useful skills in the game, but you can effectively max out your house at just level 83. Actually going all the way to 99 gets you the skillcape, which likewise has one of the most useful perks giving you a bunch of free teleports, but you need to earn over 10 million XP (4x your total up to that point) which will cost you likely over one hundred million gold and at least a dozen hours of high-intensity efficient gameplay if you want to get it done as fast as possible. Is that worth it for a small quality of life perk? Only if you're an extremely dedicated player, which is what level 90+ content is designed for. It is not a realistic goal you need to complete if you don't already have that level of autism.
