Actually I'd say what really killed telltale was not innovating. TWD was a hit, but eventually people realized it was a movie where your choices don't actually matter. Instead of fixing this, Telltale doubled down and spun their games as "interactive movie experiences". Except that just means their stories that are not good enough for TV shows are also not good enough for gamers now realizing they are playing movies.

There's a reason why Detroit was recieved incredibly well since it actually expanded on the previous adventure games from cage.

I haven't played until dawn, but that is not the case for quantic dream. Even in heavy rain, an ancient game by today's standards, you can get everyone but the main two characters killed very early on and it directly affects the endings and other routes. For example if you get Madison killed at the doctor encounter (first possible death), you lose her romance with Ethan, Ethan can no longer save Shaun by himself, and Ethan loses the get out of jail free card if he fails the QTE to escape the police after the salamander trial.

So I guess we'll be able to actually kill Shroud at the end? I expected a reveal of his identity in the finale, with him escaping for a season 2.

It actually isn't. You can view the decision trees in the game and its kind of wild how fucking big they get. A cool example I found personally was that with Kara, her story hinges entirely on Marcus. I failed to get her over the border and she got put into the gas chambers, barely surviving. But I watched a YouTube play through and she managed to get over the border easily. Then years later I watched another play through and some guy got her to the border, but fucked and got caught by the receptionist. If Marcus leads a peaceful rebellion he sees it on TV and let's her pass because androids are le good. If Marcus leads an evil rebellion, or he dies and North takes over, or Connor assassinates him, then he turns Kara in and she dies.

They wanted to move away from being adventure games, okay, then they should've leaned into being more like vnslop (like Dispatch).
