FFXIV players, especially the types that frequent this thread, should all try WoW at least once. Not to push people to convert, but to see how much better FF could be. WoW has no issues with job variety, for example.

That being said, even if almost every FF job could be described as a builder-spender, that framing is somewhat inaccurate for the actual focus/fun of many of the jobs. Black Mage is a B/S, but really, ice phase is so short that you're hardly building, it's much more a job about movement management. Samurai is much more buildy-spendy, but the actual challenge of the job is centered around smartly fitting in Higanbana and adjusting your rotation to do so.

Other jobs really aren't B/S's at all; Dragoon and Bard are about having too many buttons to press and having to make decisions about which to prioritize. (I mean, Bard has resources, but that's more about giving you another plate to spin).

Unfortunately, things have regressed towards B/S more with time. Monk used to be a job about maximizing damage while working around buff/debuff timers, but now you build and spend balls. And Black Mage used to have a (unintentional) whole side about choosing the correct lines to maximize damage given the situation, but that was all but killed.

I've played WoW, and I currently am playing Fellowship and enjoying it quite a bit. They're just entirely different games, though.

The problem with complaints about the way jobs are designed here is that people seem to think you can just change the jobs to be "more interesting" (according to what they think would be interesting) without also having to completely redesign the way content is designed and played.

WoW style content is messy, riddled with RNG and reactive elements. This is perfectly fun to play and I certainly understand if you prefer this style of content to what FF14 offers, especially if you aren't interested in high end raiding.

But for many people the appeal of FF14 is that fights are a synchronised, scripted dance. And high end raids challenge players to not just play their rotation pretty well, but practically perfectly down to the GCD. DPS checks can be super tightly tuned because the damage output of an optimised party is highly predictable. FF14 fights are big optimisation puzzles with relatively minor reactive elements or opportunities.

I'm all for improving the game, and making jobs more interesting to play. I'm not saying there's no room for it or the game is perfect as is. I'm just pointing out how comparisons to WoW aren't very helpful. For WoW style classes to work, you basically need WoW style content, at which point all you've done is turned FF14 into a completely different game - one you can already play elsewhere.

You can have these scripted fights and still have more unique rotations for each job, they're not mutually exclusive. And on the topic of tight DPS checks, I'd take more fun gameplay over slightly more balance 10/10 times.

Being able to play my optimal perfect rotation on total autopilot because it's the exact same every single time is so damn boring. Job design is, imo, the single weakest part of the entire game right now. Story included.

Now they would have to spend money to hire more devs to actually do the extra balancing and design, I think that is a FAR bigger wall to any major changes than anything else lol.

I don't think Dawntrail as a whole is the calamitous event that is killing XIV that people are trying to push it to be, but it certainly wasn't a hit/success either. She was probably considered a part of that reception, so might be considered poison.

For me at least, its how I keep track of where I am in the fight. I can be very precise with my mitigation usage, and this lets me sneak out extra uses of certain key mitigations, like getting to press Reprisal almost on cd in M2S or using an early Shake to get it back after the 3rd hit of the multi hit in M8S. I can combine my knowledge of what mech I'm on with where I am in my rotation, and I understand this system well enough to make adjustments.

Admittedly, this would be less fun if I wasn't on tank. Mitigations mean I'm hitting my buttons in an order that varies from fight to fight, and I don't get that on DPS. There's a reason I only gear tanks and caster, cause caster is the closest I have to that kind of fight dependent rotation. Except instead of mitigations, what casters have is movement tools. I'm still pressing the same buttons pull after pull, which means I know how I can get better each pull, but then I also have to change things up from fight to fight.

She's responsible for pushing 'representation' in voice actors matching the character the jeets in Thavnir for example.

But I would suggest her actions outside the game damaged her reputation beyond recoverable with how she went full mask off.

I'm also a tank and M6S is legitimately the most fun I have ever had tanking in this game lol. I personally find most of the tanks rotations to be pretty dull. DRK especially. With GNB being the clear winner for me. Though it is hilarious how many invulns you get in Ultimates on WAR. Progged FRU on PLD and recleared a few times on WAR and it was just dumb lol. Felt like I had a new Holm every damn phase.

Also if we're talking interesting movement tools, Reaper is by far the most fun. Been filling for my friends static on M8 with it and placing the return portal in the right spot based on different mechanics is both fun and hilarious when I fuck it up. Especially since M8 has such small platform(s).

And they're reducing complexity in Midnight to coincide with removal of combat addons. Arcane Mage, for example, has such a complicated priority system for Arcane Barrage it had to be automated by a weak aura lol. I don't know how you map that out on a spreadsheet but you're welcome to try.

And again, not saying to completely copy WoW. We just need some fucking spice, the jobs are so uninteresting to play compared to every other MMO on the market.

There's also lots of downsides, dungeons outside of M+ are braindead in a way nothing in FFXIV is (bosses? mechanics? skipped in 15s) the overworld feels "fuller" but, like GW2, its nothing but busywork. I think diversity in games is good, FFXIV is the boss fight game, WoW is the dungeon game, GW2 is the ubisoft open world game in mmo form, etc. So everyone can get something they like out of it and each are designed according to those strengths. FFXIV's biggest problem, imo, back in ARR and HW was that it didn't really have an identity of its own it just copied WoW's homework wholesale including down to how jobs were designed but the team found their niche and the playerbase for that niche and should continue to build off that.

Well, it does have incredibly barebones native controller support and there are addons, such as ConsolePort, that extend it to make it more FF14-ish. Definitely worth testing out on the free trial if you're so inclined.

Fair warning (and this is an incredibly niche issue most people won't encounter but I do and it endlessly haunts me): the cursor cannot interact with nameplates while WoW detects controller inputs.

WoL doesn't have special automatic primal killing powers. WoL's ability grants defense against primals, not offense. There's nothing wrong with summoning a primal, and Necron should have been unbeatable by normal means. The actual problem with 7.3 is that Hiroi ignored both the lore of tempering and what he wrote about Necron's own rules five minutes beforehand. Necron should have been infinitely self sustaining and we should have had to put him in a Memoria crystal or something. But instead he just had Meat Speen give a pep talk to break tempering, which somehow also broke the mechanism for resummoning even though Necron's own fear of its own death was supposed to be the catalyst.

After every other expansion the 7.1 period showed an increase over launch, before then gradually dipping and climbing back up toward the end of the expansion cycle. While for Dawntrail the drop was instantaneous.

Generally not. Most of the time when a game is bad, it's not bad on purpose. It's bad because the people making it failed to deliver on their ideas, or that those ideas were poorly thought out.

And this is kind of the thing - it's the same fucking game. There is no significant difference between FFXIV as it is now and FFXIV as it was a few years ago, beyond some relatively minor things. The core of the game is basically the same.

The most we might be running into is that a longer patch cycle is causing people to get frustrated and burnt out faster, as people are stuck with the same content for longer periods of time.

Soken having his "Blinking the words torture" style letter on the dawntrail album saying he wasn't comfortable with musical music like he did with Smile, but ishikawa asked him for it. I think he even joked about he wasn't being held hostage to make it or something. Just imagine that kind of anxious hand wringing for any of his prior work. Yoshi was selling up 8.0 for class changes in one of the last liveletters before DT and it struck me as pic related when 7.0 was about to drop.

There just didn't seem to be a whole lot of confidence. But they're course correcting and it makes me more optimistic for the future. Not guaranteed optimistic, but more than I was previously which had been witness to L after L with 7.x
