Main demographic for most media is 40 and up, it's why the key demographic which is most sought after is 18-45.
DQ and FF are long-standing series, of course they have older fans and for the average age to be younger than it is would mean all of the fans from previous decades stop playing.

FFVII remake is only now coming to Switch 2, but what about complete wastes of money like their phone games that shutter in a years time or shit like Forspoken, Left Alive, Foamstars and Babylon's Fall. Not a single Switch game has been big budget, it's almost entirely A/AA games on tiny budgets primarily developed by Asano Team, this isn't even half assed, and if you break down spending per title Square Enix would have put more resources into Xbox releases than Switch releases. If they want to make money they would have put out some real games on Nintendo hardware, they had 8 years to do this and now they have a second chance and they are squandering it yet again. This is just one avenue to turn their shit around, more focused AA titles instead of big budget AAA titles with no audience would be a smart move, reducing their phone output would be another, reducing their AAA budgets would be another.
At this rate Square Enix only future is heading towards a heavily discounted buyout since their IP has lost significant value over the last 20 years.

They spent the entire ps3 generation on lightning and 13 shit, released 15 in an unfinished and unsatisfying state, 16 isn't even a fucking rpg, ffxiv is starting to fuck up bad and got complacent, stranger of paradise is fucking kino and more of an rpg than 16 could ever hope to be but is a side game with bad optimization and a rough release with journalists shitting on the game, and besides that there's the pixel remasters being overpriced and also admitting that SE's best days are far behind them.
They don't know what the fuck to do with final fantasy, even though the answer has been right there and obvious for a long time

Nintendo has managed to grow new younger fans while also not alienating their audience.

The amount of zoomers that got into Expedition 33 shows that people are open to classic games.

I’m 27 and got really into FF as a kid, but hardly anything past X aside from Crisis Core ever resonated with me. It’s frankly an IP that’s been dead for longer than a lot of the RPG audience has been alive now. Among zoomers there’s plenty of appreciation for Final Fantasy. Just not as an ongoing franchise. It’s effectively dead on that front, aside from the MMO briefly being a big hit.

I’m 44 so grew up with the og Squaresoft, so many hits in such a short time. We were quite spoiled back then, the FFXI mmo was one of my first so it was funny exploring others like SWToR and seeing how different they were from vastly different philosophies. Losing experience on defeat, the ability to lose levels and be unable to equip your current gear, not having maps to any zone you enter just handed to you for existing… It was eye opening and every mmo after felt like easy mode.

I don’t hold much hope for them bringing me back into the fold though as I wasn’t fond of XV and XVI completely turned me off with the lack of party. At least Strangers of Paradise was fun, would love to see a game with Balthier as the main; I can dream

I'm one of those older FF fans. SMT games always bore me half way through. It took nearly 20 years for me to finally beat SMT1, and then I did 2 immediately after. The Persona spin-offs are way too fucking repetitive in the worst ways. Also the calendar system gets annoying sometimes.

I tried getting into P5 as I loved the aesthetic, music and turn based combat but the core Persona stuff was not for me. The school stuff was a miss but it was also my first Persona game so it was nice to experience it regardless.

Dragon Quest and most other Squenix series didn't get good marketing. So most people under age 30 don't notice them. Final Fantasy got all the marketing possible, but the later games were so shit people lost interest in the IP.

I was disappointed to lose the class system from III but I think the most annoying thing is that so far I'm just going through what are essentially hallways on the world map. I liked the more freeform exploration of the first three. I'm also playing the DS version and it's a little crusty but I'm assuming that's an emulation thing.
