Sorry, Tim. You just can't compete.

All you had to do was have feature parity with Steam Timmy. You didn't need to go through the decade of teething that Steam did to figure out how to make the platform decent and desirable to consumers. Literally all you had to do was copy them and you might have had an actual chance.

Unironically why is it so hard for these corpos to just make Steam but better? Their stores are either straight up broken or laughably lacking in features.

Because suits are retarded and will inevitably skimp and cut costs on some key part of the development or implementation. They also work off retarded ROI calculations that don't correctly factor in the long term potential of doing it properly from the get go. So it is either just written off as a necessary cost centre and investment minimised, or they just fuck something up and give up on it before it can get real traction.

Because that costs money and we want less cost but more profit

Corpo's work in 3 months time frame and the few that think about long term profits, customer goodwill or even quality of the product are sacked. If a fly can only think 3 seconds in advance, why should it care if it enters a fly trap chamber? Its going to take more than 3 seconds for it to die, so why should it care? Same with corpos.

the suits just want money and lack any actual passion or interest in the project that makes it. a person who does not play videogames, does not develop videogames, and does not care about videogames will not have any real inclination to make sure their product functions beyond making money.
Early Valve was passionate leadership that recruited talented people (like how a bunch of source games started as mods) who similarly had a passion for making something genuinely good, not just making something for profit.

The people who cry about Steam should be forced to live through the Games For Windows Live era all over again.

More importantly, Gabe and others were Microsoft veterans who had a very intimate understanding of corporate vampires and how they ruin everything. There are plenty of passionate people who get bowled over by big players once they become a threat, but Valve was able to match them step for step because they knew the playbook by heart.
