Which age of empires would you recommend to someone new to the series?

2 or 4. would maybe lean more on 4. campaigns in 2 can feel a bit outdated unless you've nostalgia for it

1 is perfectly obsolete, watch a longplay if you're really curious.
2 is the one you want, it has way too much content, they even started adding AoE1 timeline stuff. The multiplayer is actually alive, a rarity for RTS these days.
Age of Mythology is an odd one, but with highly acclaimed campaign and civilization gimmicks.
3 is an odd, odd one. It's like you take AoE2 and do virtually everything differently - you might want to try it if you dislike 2. It's similar to AoM in many ways, tho.
4 is a do-over of 2. I don't know much about it other than the campaigns being ass.
Some nerds also revived Age of Empires Online if you want something different, it's free.
