Because everything that made HK so good, and so popular, was worse in SS.

The pacing in HK was utterly perfect whereas SS drags on like a motherfucker.
Nobody cared about the mechanics in HK, and while they're a welcome addition in SS, it's as if that's where 90% of dev time went.

The reason everyone gave a shit about HK was because of the unique setting. The story is basically just dark souls tier shit but the presentation was excellent. The environments and microcosm civilizations were extremely cool.

Verdania, Ant Kingdom and Coral Tower were EASILY the three coolest zones in SS but those clearly came as afterthoughts while every other zone is the most generic shit ever with a few exceptions.

As many others have said before, nobody wants to replay SS. Not only because it's so long and tedious, but because nothing in game is worth experiencing again.
Whereas in HK half the reason to replay was literally just to see all of Hallownest again.

It's indicative of game quality when the best parts of the game are member berries over the knight and the elevator in red memory.
Hopefully team cherry learns from this (they won't) because if it takes another 7 years to make some shit like this, it just isn't worth it

The most disappointing thing for me was the fact the game is divided into 3 acts, and unless you REALLY go out of your way to avoid it, you're going to have to get all movement upgrades before moving on to the next act. And that's where it's funny: how come a huge chunk of act 3 bosses are mechanically weaker than act 1's? How come Silk is probably easier than most bosses in this game? It's like she's tuned for speedrunners with 0 upgrade.
That's my point. The design of most bosses is dogshit, it's like they made them just because they needed a boss at specific locations, but no other purpose.
If you actually remove contact damage, you'd notice most bosses would be as harmless as Silk because they just didn't care enough to flesh them. Why so many bosses disappointingly easy and braindead? Why are so many zones empty and just corridors?

The answer is: they took too many shortcuts to make their game, filled it with too much garbage instead of thinking about: what exactly is the challenge, there? If they actually removed half of the game, I'm not kidding, it would unironically be better.

The presentation was the only thing that made HK special. The story is zanzibart nonsense that should have died in the 2010s. The environments and atmosphere were great. The combat is tight but nothing remarkable and held up *just* as long as it needed to to have a satisfying challenge at the end of the game with hard optional content.

SS takes the dark souls 2 route of boss design (with notable obvious exceptions). A big bungus that has a basic combo, a basic projectile, and a chimp out flail attack. The peak of laziness is making these fights harder by slapping 2 damage onto every attack, and even 2 contact damage, which is a frankly diabolical choice. They're not hard in an interesting way, it is literally the definition of artificial difficulty. HK kept 2 damage mostly to the "Dont get hit by this retard" telegraphed attacks.

Then you have to factor in run backs through environments where many enemies have a 2 damage attack too. Even back in 2022 FromSoft knew runbacks weren't an interesting challenge with stakes of marika.

SS is peak outdated design and does nothing groundbreaking compared to HK. It baffles me that it took them as long as it did to make, and its so interesting seeing the praise completely dry up as people get later into the game
