the devs added items in order for them to be used anon, the game is balanced around the player being capable of using items. sure if you're good you can beat everything without using any items, but they're still there for a reson if you need them

You can use about 4 items and not be penalized in score so yes you aren't supposed to. You get a x1.2 score mult for no items though.

For me the real red pill was remembering you can spam items HARD in Purgatory and nobody cares.

It's not a math thing. They don't penalize you until you've used more than 4 items. Most level you should try to no-items it and save a couple elixirs for the boss.

1.0 means default. 1.2 is a bonus and 0.8 is a penalty. It just a fact anon. That's how they framing works.

Completely fucking irrelevant to the discussion at hand. Platinum communicated it quite clearly: You get to use 4 items and they don't penalize you for it. They will reward you for using none but you get to use 4 for "free".

Yes, the first 3 didn't punish you at all for using items and Bayonetta punishes your score way more for using items. Use them as much as you need for your first clear.

If you are talking about the dark dragon blade, you need to do all the boss trials to unlock it permanently.
You can do them on any difficulty though so you can just rush through them on Hero.
