this is from pandora tomorrow, but they essentially achieved these visuals with clever selective use of baked-in lighting so they could allocate resources for really good shadows when they need them for few characters. nowadays everything has to be real time.

Splinter Cell was always the poor man's Metal Gear. Hideo Kojima was a genius who knew how to tell a compelling narrative about Americans and their corruption. Ubisoft didn't get that memo and instead decided to go full "America, Fuck Yeah!" with these propaganda ridden games. Of course, Tom Clancy only exploded in popularity after 9/11, where every American became some zealous patriot, feeding into these games like pigs to slop.

It blows my mind that spies vs mercs is the one of the best multiplayer modes and ubisoft just lets it die for nothing. They brought back pandora tomorrow on steam with no multiplayer but requires a uplay account.
As bad as double agent was (gen 7 version), the multiplayer was fun unlike the singleplayer. I have no idea how it was for blacklist since the servers are dead.

The story sucked through, through and through.

1 was amazing, but too clinical, same as every espionage thriller. PT was extremely forgettable and Chaos Theory absolutely mid.

I believe what he means is the engine has a stencil map for every possible position the player could be in in that room has has a prebaked shadow map for it, as opposed to calculating rays in real time. I could be talking out my ass though.

Any way to get a proper Xbox controller scheme/controls on PC for Splinter Cell 1-3?

Absolute fucking kino. The interesting thing is it's insanely easy to blend animations like that in unreal with respect to enemies, or anything in the environment really, but CT really is *the* game where the devs went above and beyond with absolutely everything. It still blows my mind that it was not only a great SP game, but a great co-op and PVP game as well. Absolutely one of the best games ever made imo, but you'll never see it on a top ten list.

Awesome i'll give that a try, also I just remembered I haven't actually tried SC since Steam added it's really good controller support, so I might actually be able to get something akin to the original analog controls with enough fucking around.

Unironically did consider buying one of the newer Xbox's second hand just for SC (and probably Crimson Skies MechAssault if they work to)

It's insane, meanwhile devs these days struggle to put out a functional game doing one thing. PS3/360 era was really the death knell for developers and studios. Crazy to think Ubisoft use to be a god tier studio.

Not a bad option, especially if it works for DA, it's been a few years since I played around with Xenia, it was a bit shit back then for SC (Tenchu Wrath of Heaven was alright), but might be better now. But honestly a cheap Xbox Series X might cost me less time wise endlessly tweaking an emulator and googling fixes and builds to fix specific issues with specific games which always seems to be the way.

that's definitely not how the shadows work. they are real-time. and I suspect it's shadow volumes, not shadow maps. not sure what you mean by "stencil map", that sounds like a conflation of the two techniques. the stencil map would be the texture in the stencil buffer, something generated at run-time. you couldn't precompute every possible version of it even for just one room in the game, it would be billions of textures kek
