Xbox was pretty great. Yea it was kind of the Halo machine, but it had a lot of underrated titles.
Halo alone made it a solid competitor with the PS2/Gamecube for its couch multiplayer element.
360 was arguably an improvement. Great games lineup. The Arcade marketplace was neat.
Had all the positives of the Xbox + it was an HD machine. Slightly more affordable than the PS3 and arguably had better games, unless you really liked certain PS3 exclusives like MGS4.
Shit hit the fan with the Xbox One announcement. That was kind of legendarily botched. I don't know how out of touch people at Microsoft actually are, but the idea of an always online mandatory Webcam attached to your console is very obviously corporate surveillance, and people actually like their privacy, so idk what the FUCK they were thinking. Lots of other dystopian/draconian bullshit with that console announcement.
If the Xbox One announcement didn't kill Microsoft, Bungie moving on from Halo and parting ways with Microsoft also killed the Xbox. Microsofts in-house Halo games sucked.
So the Xbox One was this awful draconian console with bad Halo games. That killed the Xbox's momentum.
Then they started doing this thing, for the past several years, of buying up devs and then never really producing any games with them. Idk what they were trying to do, maybe they had good intentions, but every time I heard the words "Xbox has acquired a new studio" I started taking it as a sign that that studio would probably never make anything again.
